Just out of interest can anyone explain why my Garmin 550 went dark as I approached the Arctic Circle in Norway going north a couple of weeks ago and also went dark today as I crossed it again going south in Finland. In both cases it stayed dark, looked like it was the night setting, for about 30 mins and then recovered to normal daytime brightness. In both cases this was early afternoon. Clearly I'm not worried about this, but interested in understanding why. Cheers

No. I would say get out more, but clearly you have been.. :D

Nuvi software update 4.0 was supposed to fix this very problem - what do you have?

Its a pain in the arse

I have a Zumo 660 and a Montana 600T - both do exactly the same, at the same time, through me into a bit of panic a few weeks ago in Sweden but then i just changed the settings to always daylight and its OK.

Same here. Both 550 and 660 both went dark when we were in Norway a couple of years ago but came back full brightness after a couple of minutes. No Idea why maybe cos its daylight all day in the summer and got confused.
Didn't do it on the way back though :nenau

Yes - my 660 did it too somewhere near Mo i Rana a couple of weeks ago and so did my mate's Garmin something else. I forced mine into daylight mode for the rest of the trip but when I put it back to auto mode here in the UK it was OK again.
