Garmin European 2016.2 map update

You could try formatting the card out of the device in your Mac first.

Ok that sounds logical, (and you'll have to excuse my stupidity on this bit) - how do I do that? I also presume there is no format card option in the Nav V (unliek a camera)?

I have just updated the maps on a brand new, fresh out of the box, Nav V.

I slotted in the cheapest micro-SD card I could find in Maplins, connected it my my Mac via Garmin Express and away it went. The whole process was quicker than it first locating sateilltes.

Another Nav V Richard? You must nearly have as many Nav V's as you have bikes :D

I'll dig out a new SD card and see what happens!

Guilty as charged, me lud. Here's my plea in mitigation....

My first Nav V came free with the bike. The second I luckily bought very cheap off UKGSer. I only have two as I often need a back-up to lend to bods on Wanders that I run. Similarly, I like to have a back-up of my own when miles away from home with a bunch of bods who might be relying on me getting them somewhere. My original Nav V has become a little bit unstable, so I want to take it right back to its original factory settings. If that doesn't cure it, then it's off to Garmin with the thing.

I also want to use it for experimenting with loading alternative maps, for instance Open Street and maybe some topographical maps, too. It's not something I have mucked about with before, not least as I like the Navtec maps and get on just fine with BaseCamp. What I would like to see though is what the other maps might have to offer in addition (or as an alternative) and learn how they work. If I can then help others with problems they might have loading or running alternative maps into a Garmin based device, great.

What I'd really like to do is remove all the extra guff that comes with modern GPS devices, which I don't want. For instance, sound, Bluetooth connection, music, telephone, 'My bike', unit conversion, lists of BMW garages and shops, phrase book, speed camera database, 'wiggly roads' and take it to a state that replicates where GPS devices were before bikers demanded that they were turned into entertainment centres. I rarely ever ask the device to plot me a route from A to B or from A to D via B and C, so all I want is something that will display a route I have created myself. In short, I just want a reliable electronic map and a self-created list of favourites with no extra bells and whistles.

The only other thing I want to better understand (not least as I don't think I'm using BaseCamp to its full potential) is the best use of announced waypoints (as opposed to shaping points or via-points) and the 'Skip function'. Having a spare device means I can create two routes, one with announced waypoints and another without. If things go tits-up when I play about, then it'll be easy to slot the other device in. It'll also make it easier to spot where I'm making a mistake with how I think a device operates. Despite not needing or ever using the entertainment based functions, there are some very trick navigation functions that I probably don't use properly, if at all.

Anyway, it's more useful than a set of trick levers and footrests or whatever it is that Nutty is trying to persuade me to buy :D

I think the last point alone is enough to get all charges dismissed :D

Hi chaps,

I updated my Nav V the other day. It wanted to put the new maps on my sd card whereas I wanted them on the unit so I can swap cards if / when I need to. I took the sd card out, tried again and the maps were installed on the unit as I wanted.

Have I broken some rule by doing this? In which case do I need to apologise to Garmin and promise not to do it again? :(

It seemed the logical thing to do, but sometimes Garmin procedures are not logical at all.

Matt

WTF does this mean please? Garmin express says my maps are up to date with 2016.10. I'm obviously a bod who can't get it!!

It's a different version of the map & only works with newer devices. My 660 is up to date with 2016.10.

That may be the the reason why some bods end up with 2 maps, 1 on device & 1 on SD card. Best to do as you have & remove the card first so it overwrites the old map on the device. This has clearly worked in your case.

Having spoken to Garmin, it is possible that this latest map update (2016.20) is only currently available for BMW Nav. V's.

Has anyone found it for other Devices, e.g. Zumo 660.

My Garmin Express says, "You're up to date!" with Software Version: 5.10 & Map: Full Coverage of Europe 2016.10.

Nav V & later Garmin devices

I believe NTU gets up to 4 updates a year whilst NT only gets 2.

Unicode
Current City Navigator Europe maps are available as NT as well as NTU (Unicode) maps. The Unicode version includes codepage 65001 for special characters of eastern european languages and cyrillic script. Normal NT version only has western european characters. Only current Garmin unit series (about from 2010) can use Unicode versions. All other devices can't show cp 65001 characters.

Also birds eye view?

So newly released devices since 2010?

A phone call to Garmin Customer Services has confirm that NT Maps are updated twice per year & NTU up to 4 times per year.

My Zumo 660 was purchased in March 2011 with NT Maps installed.

Thanks for the help.

It appears the new NT map is available and has been for a while, just incase you had not noticed.
