looking into a basic gps,the legend has base maps foe n/s america,has anybody used the south america ones?

The base maps are pretty crap. When I was in the USA a couple of years ago, I bought my e-trex Vista. The base map was less detailed than a 1" to 25mile road atlas! So I wouldn't expect to be able to rely on them too much in South America.
The base maps tend to have the same detail as "World Map" if you've got that.
