can you use a copy from someone one else or do you have to buy a new to use it?

Both the CityNavigator and CitySelect families of cartography are serial number locked to a specific GPSR. It's pointless to even think about copying them - even if someone sent you their original CD's, you could not use them without an unlock code that is specific to the serial number of your GPSR.

There is a cartgraphy product called 'MetroGuide' that is not serial number locked. It supports the older model GPSRs - those built from about 1995 to 2001 or so. This cartography will run on the newer GPSRs, but it doesn't really yield satisfactory results.

The bottom line is that if you want to use a contemporary GPSR, you have to have licenced cartography. When you buy a new GPSR, it comes with the cartography and an unlock code for that GPSR serial number included.

Thanks - kind of you to say that.

I have been pretty busy at work this year, also, I purchased a new Volkswagen last fall, and have been busy moderating a forum for owners of this particular model of VW. Now, I'm back in Switzerland, and planning to do a few months of riding (and testing of the new 2720 on my moto) - so my interests are re-focused here.
