So I downloaded the free trial of the speed camera database for the uk and tried using it. The fixed cameras come up just fine and that's very handy.

However, it seems to think there are mobile cameras bloody everywhere and all I can hear half the time is the ping ping ping of the warning. It's driving me nuts. Either their database is completely screwed or someone's moving the cameras all the time.

I don't see the point of having mobile cameras in the database because (no shit sherlock) they're all mobile. Unfortunately you don't seem to be able to turn off just the mobile camera warnings and the warning noise is so annoying, goes on for ages and doesn't warn you of anything that I've turned all the camera warnings off.

Does anyone else find this to be the case? Is there anything I can do about it?

With the Pocket GPS World database you can download the zoned files and remove the mobile ones. You have to pay the annual sub of £19 for the privilege though. Not sure if you can do the same with the Garmin data, probably not.

For you, living in London the frequency of mobile sites is too dense for it to really be useful in some areas. SWMBO has commented on the same when using my sat nav there.

good question

I have the same problem need the warnings as license is my job but the Mobile warnings tend to make you switch your brain off to the fixed locations
the Mobile locations are used but only occasionally and you will normally get flashed by other motorist to warn anyway.

So yes a way of switching them off would be good :thumb

Any boffins got the answer?

I use a Novus GPS I got at the bike show about 3 years ago - A great bit of kit (cheap to buy and free updates for life) this replaced a Road Angel, the reason I tried the Novus was that the Road Angel was crap at mobile sites, running them side by side for a while the Novus picked up 2-3 to the RA's one.

Fast forward a few years and now there are a lot more mobile sites, some areas are much worse than others. I went for a day out in Wales and it was going mad, it gives a 500m warning most of the time (longer on straight roads such as dual carriageways as 500m may not be enough) and often before you had gone past the actual camera location a warning was coming in for another one, sometimes 3 sites in under 2 miles.

After a while you start to ignore it, I came around a bend to be staring at a bloody Talivan unit, I jammed on the brakes which caused the bike to buck and sit up a bit and wobbled past the van at about 20mph.

I actually have no idea how fast I was going so had the two week wait to see what happened. I was not hammering along but just flowing down a nice windy open road, may have been doing not much more than 50, or possibly over 70, can't see this thing was doing anything for road safety.

The following day a bloke I know who leads ride outs for a motorcycle club was in the same area, one of the ladies in the party lost it on a bend and went into a hedge, around the corner was another smashed up bike, after a while the plod arrived and commented on how most weekends someone ends up in the same hedge, I suggest instead of having vans everywhere perhaps they just put up a few dangerous bend / accident blackspot signs - and coming back to the Novus it does have warnings for both accident blackspots and tight bends, the blackspot ones are very good warning for many of the nasty hidden junctions in my area.

The mobile warnings on my Garmin drive me mad  if they could be separated from the fixed sites i'd be more inclined to leave them switched on.
