Have upgraded the software on my Garmin V from 2.08 to the 'new' vewrsion (2.20?). Went down to London yesterday (from Cheshire) - needed GPS to get me to Russell Square (which it did) - BUT I had it running all the way downn the M6/M1.

Despite having all maps loaded (from v5) of disc for required route, I kept getting the 'off route' message and auto - racalculating. The display from time to time told me where it thought I was, which often seemed to be backroads near the M6 I was on (I seemed to be travelling doen some reidental streets at motorway speeds). I have not yet uploaded the tracks to see where it thinks I've been.

Is this a problem relating to the new software - it never happened on runs with the older stuff.

I have upgraded as well and I can't say I have any problems - I reckon it just doesn't like you. Check you autorouting setting , maybe something is set wrong in there.
Good luck

I've resorted to turning of the autorouting altogether now.

I also tend to often get poor satelite reception (even happens when there are 6 satalite signals being received, but does not lock on) - has anyone tried an amplified aeriel?

Carl,

this may not be available on the Garmin V, but my SPIII has the facility to change the default setting on the automatic route calculation facility. When I go off route now, it asks me if I want it to recalculate - if I select no, or ignore it, it allows me to continue and join the calculated route later. I've found this particularly useful when travelling through a strange town, when a re-calculate can take several minutes.

I have not tried this - it is on the GPS V (I was not aware that ignoring the prompt made it carry on) - I'll give it a go. Cheers

Carl,

The only time this used to happen to me was when I went outside of the area of the downloaded detailed maps, it mattered not that I had the route from A to B as there seems to be some disagreement somwhere between Garmin/US Military Satellites and erm Earth as to exactly where you are at a given point.

Funnily enough the only time this occured with my SPIII was when I upgraded from V4 to V5 of Mapsource City Navigator where I have V5 routes running on V4 Maps, it seemed for all the world that Garmin had moved the planet again

As it was an acknwledged problem I was advised to turn autorouting off which worked except you see yourself 'wandering' on the screen and it takes some getting used to.

Though to be fair I never did need the GPS to tell me I was on the motorway so Iused to only route to my destination when I was close by and had the detailed maps on board. That was a useful compromise - then I got fed up downloading maps so I sold it - miss its compact size badly though :(
