Garmin V software update

Having spent the last 2 days getting to know how my new toy works, I have now downloaded the latest software from Garmin's site - Version 2.50.
Before I go ahead & install it (mine has version 2.07) are there any tips or pitfalls to look out for - such as should I bother when it seems to be working fine??

I keep my V up to date and it's working fine although I have read that some people have been having a few problems.

The only problem I had was with the beta version earlier in the year that gave me an occassional lock up at the start of a journey - easily cured by turning the unit off then on again.

I take it you are holding off until 5 Jan before registering the unit so that you can get V6.00 for free.

Yes, I am also holding off until 05 January (although I'm not sure where this magical date has come from), but the version supplied is only 4.05 - what happened to Version 5.0??

Release date not shipping date!!!

Hi Guys

The way I read the FAQ it says that if you registered after the release date of the new software which in the case of City Select (Europe or North America) is September 2003.

If you are unlocking a new product after the release date of the update, you are entitled to the unlock code at no charge. In other words, you can update to the latest data for free!

So for those who have registered software post September 2003 you can still update for free.

Just contacted Garmin today the guy there said that I would get the up date and I registered it in dec 03 Just have to wait till they get the cd in stock then they will send it out!!Fingers crossed

They are doing it again......having bought a GPS V a couple of years back when they cost a packet I have suffered the indignity of having to fork out $100 more for an upgrade which they were giving away. Now they have brought out another upgrade which they are giving away with their GPS Vs which they are now selling for next to nothing too. Much that I like the GPS V and what it does I detest Garmin's marketing strategy and swear to never buy one of their products again. They depreciate like stones and and they keep giving away software upgrades to new buyers whilst the older original customers have to pay again and again. It sure is some sorry way to retain loyal customers.
My V is ok for now but no more upgrades for me and next time around no more Garmin. I wrote to them in a very civil manner some time back and got fobbed off - they promised to get back to me and guess what.....nowt.
Also the last upgrade which I foolishly paid $100 for resulted in the trakback function (which used to be great) becoming totally useless....some upgrade. Anyone who runs pre 2.30 shouldn't upgrade or your will lose the great feature of being able to record your rideouts and save them for instant recall as a route at a later date.
