garmin zumo

anyone using one of these yet ? after looking at all the complaints about the tomtom rider and their total denial of any problems i have decided that the garmin zumo 550 is the best buy for me . i need something reliable for use in both bike and car use , in the uk and europe , and would like to know what you think of the zumo from someone who is using it . thank,s .

a good well built bit of kit,, mounts are great and easy to use systems and manuals,. Mp3 is really useful as well,.

Very pleased with mine. I think for use in the car, TomTom is marginally more intuitive and easier to use (I have a TomTom 710 as well, which I bought prior to the Zumo) but on the bike, the Zumo is better by a mile.

The Rider is not very good in the car as there's no speaker in the car kit, and you have to use the Bluetooth earpiece. The Zumo is better all round.

Have had mine since they were released and rate it very highly.

As an all round package including bike, car mount and power leads I think the Zumo 550 is hard to beat.

I've owned both. Zumo wins hands down. Everthing is quality on it and it works perfectly in the car. Just something as simple as having a car speaker can make a big difference. The screen is much brighter on the zumo and better in daylight.

Compass Arrow on Zumo

I have just changed my 2720, which had bad misting problems, for a Zumo550
Apart from the screen misting up, I was very happy with the 2720. However, the Zumo seems pretty good so far, but one feature that it doesn't have is the compass arrow on the 3D and track up map, which I found very useful on the 2720. I can't believe that Garmin would have left this feature out of the Zumo, so is there something wrong with my unit or has anybody else found the same problem?

From what I've been reading there are a lot of things that have been left off the Zumo. Like no way of turning off the "Auto route recalculate". No way of turning off the "autozoom".
Maybe this is why it's been launched at circa £600mrp and not the £1000 these thing normally come out at.

I also can't believe Zumo has left out bluetooth mobile text messaging facility that TomTom Rider has got.

If you compare the SP2720 with the Zumo more from how well they to the job and less regarding what features they have:

- Zumo has a better GPS receiver giving a much more stable satellite contact.
- Zumo can store hundreds of routes making it better for long vacation touring. The 2720 can only store 30-40 halfday routes.
- Zumo has an internal battery so you can use it off-bike. No battery in the SP2720.
- Zumo destroys (recalculate) whatever route you upload while the SP2720 can navigate along exactly the route you have created. The Zumo is almost useless for riding on gravel roads & tracks.
- The SP2720 can only log 3-4 hours of riding while the Zumo can log forever onto the SD card.
