OK, what am I doing wrong here!!!

I have now done just over 2000 miles on my "05" reg GS.

I always have the fuel countdown start at between 140 and 150 miles from having filled up. I can normally only squeeze in just over 16 litres with the bike on the centre stand and with level apparently right up the spout. (Or at least it is whilst the bike is on the stand) I am very patient and dribble the last litre in very slowly.

By my reckoning I am getting very low forties fuel economy... Surely this is not right???

I expected to get better miles per gallown than this.

That does sound very low based on mine and others' experiences.

In theory there should be 4-5 litres left if you fill up the moment the countdown starts so whilst 16l seems a little low (I'm normally around 17/18l on the same basis), its not totally surprising.

I wonder if your speedo/odometer is accurate? Can you compare with a GPS or another vehicle?

I'm getting about the same as you too - although squeezing in just over 17 litres at fill up time. 2000 miles on the clock, thought consumption would be better than this.

The easiest way to get a bit more fuel in is to remove the black rubber part of the filler neck - just pull it out with your finger

Wow, what a difference! Tried this yesterday and it took less than 2 hours to get a full tank! Definitely worth a try, very easy to do and completely reversible and safe, unlike the drilling option which sounds like it might fill your engine with spare bits of metal that aren't supposed to be there.
