"GB" number plate or "GB" sticker

Last summer I saw the Spanish police checking bike number plates at the border south of Perpignan, they nicked two but they were Goldwings so it's OK :D We spoke to the riders afterwards and I think it cost them €90

Getting a little technical and remembering that the GB on the number plate is only valid in the EU - Switzerland is not EU so to be completely legal a GB plate is required to drive through Switzerland.

How things change. Lot's of posts wondering whether it was really needed. I remember years back, before foreign travel was common, people used to put GB plates on their cars just for the pose value although they had never been south of Watford. I guess that those people now put the eBay dummy BMW style satnav antennas on their roof.

Not allowed to use a GB sticker at all on our bikes.

Yes , "but where would we be if we didn't have rules".......... (everybody) ..."FRANCE!"

I have a GB number plate and have never had problems anywhere in Europe, but apparently they are not legal on bikes in the UK. Contacted a few places that would make them up, but all of them said that they would be classed as "show plates", and when they were delivered there was a warning sticker on the rear of the plate. The plate dimensions and lettering are standard size - I think the problem is the edge spacing.

I'd be interested to hear others opinions.

I got a little £3 sticker from Halford, because I wasn't going to pay 15 quid for a new number plate.

Technically no good, as its too small, but show willing.

Number plate

I used a GB sticker that I received from going to the Isle of Man.

Seemed to work ok I never got any adverse response despite having Guernsey plates, so only displaying a 4 digit number.

Should have used a GBG sticker but they were in short supply at the time.

Guernsey had now abandoned tax discs, charging road tax via fuel costs, could make it confusing for road checks..

Ive put mine here , Dont want to get in trouble with the law.

These days all I have is an (ADV) sticker and a skull and crossed sabres sticker - no problems so far :augie

do i need a "GB" number plate (with the blue background and letters "GB") or will an older "all yellow" number plate with a "GB" sticker on the back box suffice for riding mainland europe?

thank you!

Legal on cars and not on bikes? Seems strange for the authorities to differentiate bwtween the two at this level. No mention of it on http://www.dvla.gov.uk/media/pdf/leaflets/displayofnumberplates.pdf

Never ever had a GB sticker or GB numberplate when travelling abroad... I do however have a St.Georges Flag sticker as I'm English.

I concur. I have a SCO sticker and it's never caused a problem.:thumb2
