I’m wondering if anyone else has had this thing happen to them?

I have a 95 1100gs 41000miles

I’m changing from 2nd to 3rd and the gear changes, I’m accelerating hard and it suddenly engages again in the same gear.

It seem that the gear was only half in place and then fully engaged about a second later.

It happens most in third but has happened once or twice in second as well. It mostly happens on the up shift but has happened on the down as well.

What I want to know is what causes this and can it be fixed before my box goes bang?

Or am I worrying unduly and it will be all right in the morning?

I’ve tried a search on this but haven't found this fault just the taper roller bearing fault so if you can point me in the right direction.

It sounds to me like a bent selector fork.

One way to get bent selector forks is to use clutchless changes. Occassionaly a gear won't go in so easily and a bit more pressure is used, this forces the gear into place, which is fine, however sometime a bit more pressure than that will be required and you then bend a selector fork.

I have personally seen two 96 R1100GS bikes with this problem and the symptons they were having, were as you've described.

One person, who did plenty of clutchless gear changes found out that he had bent two selector forks, which in turn did side damage to one of the gears on the lay-shaft. This in turn did damage to two gears on the output shaft. The selector cam pawl had also been damaged.

After carefully weighing up the cost of replacement parts and labour, he decided to get a complete new gearbox, it was only about $400.00 more.

Do you, or have you done clutchless changes, or recently stuffed up big time, a gear change?

Mick.

Mick, thanksfor the reply.
I’ve only had the bike for the last 3500 miles so I can't tell what happened in the past apart from the bike came with over £6000 of service receipts and extras fitted. The last and only owner seamed to be meticulous in his upkeep.
I don't do clutchless gear changes and I’ve never tried to force it in gear.
I do a positive movement in my gear changing it does feel that is in 3rd but when I’m accelerating hard it seems to drop in again as I’ve said earlier (it happens every other time I change when going hard, but happens a lot less in normal riding maybe one in ten or even less frequently).
I would say it has happened twice in second gear and never in the rest of the gears.
What should I do about the gearbox, get it stripped and sorted?
I’m just worried that if I go to the bother of getting someone to spit it and they can't see a fault.
Does anyone have a preference to the type of oils they use in the gearbox and does one make a big difference over another?
If so what’s the best make of oil to use?
:nenau :nenau

Obvious - but have you lubed your linkage and adjusted it perfectly ?

Next cheapest check would be to change to a fully synth oil .

If it still feels rough - you've got some work to do..........

Phil's reply makes sense, I forgot about that possible fault.

However if the gear change linkage is alright, then putting in synthetic or any other kind of oil, will more than likely only prolong what may be a fault.

Have you dropped the oil, to see if there are any metal pieces that shouldn't be there? That, would be the first thing I'd do!

Remember, it only takes one stuffed up gear change to damage something.

Mick.
