Clinging to reality by a finger tip.
Time to change the transmission oil and Halfords seem to stock :

Castrol gear oil
API class 4
SAE 90.

BMW specify API class 5.

Can anyone one give me the name of a producer of gear oil that meets this spec - Silkolene, Duckhams etc.

Thanks.

Russ.

Some Halfords high st. shops have a limited range of lubricants

You'll find a much better range in the Superstores.

Hein Gericke often have good deals on lubes.

Thanks each.

I'm actually looking to replace the Mobilube 1 SHC SAE 75W-90 I'm currently using in both gearbox and final drive.

I've got a very small amount of oil collecting inside the rubber boot connecting final drive and swingarm and was looking to see if a move away from the 100% synthetic Mobilube 1 reduced the leak. Not much chance I know, but worth a try as the leak is so small as to be not worth the cost of renewing seals.

Boxer,

Getrag (manufacturers of the gearbox) recomend that SAE 90 GL5 should be used. the only time 75w90 GL5 should be used is for short runs during the winter but should be changed back to SAE90 GL5 for the summer.

Getrag fill the BMW gearboxes with Fuchs SAE 90 GL5. Fuchs is Silkolene in the UK.

Motorworks stock the oil:

Part number OIA11018 Castrol/Silkolene EP80-90 5 litre @ £13.96 for 5 litres.
