Im having some problems with my gearbox so has anyone removed one yet and if so how much of a pain in the behind is it ? Does anyone know of a good place to get it rebuilt ? or alternatively does anyone know if a 6 speed 1150 box will go onto a 1100 engine and final drive ?

Thanks in advance.

Iain,

What year is your bike?

My 95 1100 called it a day just before I went on Holiday. The early Upto late 95 the gearboxes had taper roller bearings that are prone to failure. BMW do an upgrade that replaces the Tapers with Straight rollers. I pulled my gearbox out and took it to Mick Barr, in Leicester, for a rebuild. It cost me £280 for the rebuild, including the upgrade, New clutch plate and few other bits.

Posted this the other day http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=8126

From memory the 1150 subframe to gearbox mountings are completely different to the 1100 you would probably need to swap the subframe and footrest hangers as well as components on the final drive...not worth the hassle I think.

Pidcocks mechanic told me you can get an exchange gearbox from BMW for around the £800 mark. This would give you the latest spec 1100 box.

Vern is in your neck of the woods. I'd contact him to find out who rebuilt his box.

Thanks for the info Rob. Mine is an 'M' so probably late 95, it keeps dropping out of 4th into 3rd when im accelerating hard ( usually overtaking ) so need to do something with it. Spoke to Vern about his, he got it done at BMV stroud and it cost £475 including a new clutch set.
Problem with mine is that the casing is broken near the footrest on the left side, so if im taking it off I want a new casing really. blah :( and i just sold my car..

Cheers

Iain.
