Got my 30k miler arriving Saturday, thought that if it was going to break it would have by then, 'cept when I rang my local ex-BMW service Tech to book the bike in for a service he told me a tale of two 1200GS he knows of which suffered gearbox failure at 34K and 38K. Both now waiting second hand boxes to become available.:blast

I'd be grateful to know how common/pitifully expensive is this?

Thanks

I don't think weak BMW gearboxes are limited to the 1200GS. I'm sure some of the more geriatric :rob members will be able to give you a full rundown :)

I had three gearbox failures in under 10,000 on my famous friday afternoon at the oktoberfest made bike (04); 1st one went at under 150 miles!
I think there was a batch of gearboxes made from bottletops or something.

12,000 service on current machine included new clutch & fix of gearbox leak under warranty.

My conclusion being that the problem with shitty gearboxes has gone and BMW (Battersea in this case) are pleasingly efficient and refreshingly honest as garages go....
