Off out at lunch on a whim to get some gearbox oil, felt a bit notchy this morning so giving it some fresh oil - can I just check that 80w90 or 85w90 is the stuff I need for a GS?

cheers

Errr...which GS ?

Proibably need to check your gear linkages from the gear lever to the gear box more than change the oil. They get dirty and can make the gearbox feel notchy. Clean them and regrease and you'll be amazed.

Just make sure it's a GL5 spec. Not GL4 - i use straight EP90

Castrol MTX 75W140

Hi,
following a recommendation I changed the gearbox oil on my 2005 R1200GS to Castrol MTX 75W140. In my oppinion it has improved slighly when cold (gear shift goes more smoothly) and more significant when running on normal temperature (less noise when shifting gear and doing that somehow more smoothly). Was an idea difficult to source over here in Norway, but got it finally. Paid something like £10,00 for 1l. Anybody else using it?

Cheers
Joerg

Really cheap down at the farmers store

I am using a 85/140W GL5 spec'd gearbox oil I found down at my local farmers store....next time you are visiting France check out any Espace Emaureau shop you see.....they stock lot's of different oils and greases from all the 'majors' plus their own branded products............I think the farmers use it for their combine harvesters or something......still,.......GS...... combine......they are both very efficient agriculteral machines aren't they?.......it's about 10 Euro's per 5 litre....

I use it in both the gear box and the rear bevel drive.....I started using it to quiet down the clunky gear change but have since found lot's of extra miles and wearing ear plugs are better at that!

I have found that it dont matter what oil you use in the box its going to be clunky, what I have noticed is when the oil is changed its smooth as silk for about 100 miles then back to the usual clunk.
I have used various makes of EP80W90, changing the oil every 6k ml's.
the bike has done 50k now and still clunking happily.

just keep thrashing it til it dies. :D
