previous owner managed to over tighten the sump plug / feck threads on gearbox sump and create a tiny crack around the drain plug.
present owner (oh - that'd be me then :eek:) bodged a repair;

"chemical metal" surrounding the drain plug and into the little crack.
grand job - works great :thumb2

but now... i'd like to change the oil.... :blast
yes - obviously the proper thing is a helicoil and ali welding for the crack.

but (no sniggering at the back there ) is it possible to remove the oil through the FILLER / level hole?

answers that dont involve turning the Bike upsidedown would be appreciated. :p
i was thinking maybe siphoning..... :nenau

TIA :)

Og the optimist.

what about one of those little hand pumps they do for draining engine oil through the dipstick. or laying it on its side. or drill a new hole and tap a thread in it. or if its one of those one with the useless kick start send it to me and i will dispose of it for you :augie:D

SYPHON . .

. . oil drain on marine engines are done by syphon, Marc, try chandlers. Think the trouble will be trying to get the tube down thro' the cluster. PJ

Marc,

You could remove the rear engine bolt, tap out the cross bar at the back of the engine and then remove the neutral switch. Sounds horrendous but really isn't that bad to do at all.

If ever you need the box rebuilding drop me a line :thumb2

Funny you should type that Rob.
My "recon" g/box has started to be a bitch to get gears and whines like a bastard :(
I'm hoping to install my spare box this week, SOOOOOOOoooooooo
you wanna "do" it for me ???:augie:augie:augie:augie

Hi I'm new to this site, well I have been reading it for a while but this is my first post.
Reguarding your gearbox oil, if you take the gear change lever out the side of the 'box and lay the bike on its side you will probably get most of the oil out that way. You may have to ride the bike to get the oil nice and thin first of course.
Just an idea from an enthusiastic amatuer, I don't profess to be an expert but I have done a lot of work on my own airheads

No Problem Proff, to buy all the bearings, seals and bits will be in the region of £80 to £90. The whining could be the fifth gear twisting on the output shaft but we won't know until it's all in bits. Anyway all bits at cost and because it's you there's no labour charge :beerjug: Obviously we can find out whats wrong before any cash is spent.

Hi

I had the same problem. My local dealer fitted a solid insert with plenty of loctite rather than a helicoil so no welding required, lasted 30,000 miles no problems.

Cheers

Sean

I would take the fuel tank off and lay the bike on it's side...
Seems like the obvious and easiest way
Otherwise you going to have to remove the Neutral light switch...And thats a lot more hassel
:aidan

Brilliant :)
Thank Youz one and all :thumb2

gives me all i need to feck it... i mean fix it up properly :D
