Gearbox Output Shaft Seal - Replacement?

Asked this very question just the other day. The answer is yes it is possible to change the seals without opening up the case – but first you’ve got it get to the gearbox! I’m sure Andy M will be along tomorrow to fill you in on the finer points – he's become very familiar with oilhead gearboxes over the last couple of days. See here

I'm about to change the bevel box pivot bearings.
Since the tools for the removal of the bevel box are the same as those required for the swingarm it seems like it might be a good time to replace the output seal [probably seeping] and lube the gear box splines as well.
 
Depending on your mileage and riding style, it could also be worth replacing the clutch plate whilst you’re in there. A touratech ceramic jobbie would be nice. I was too skint to do mine which means at some point in the future its going to needed stripping again. Be warned though, it is a big job. Andy and I did mine in about 6 hours but Andy knows what he is doing and we were getting a serious move on. I think really its weekends work going at a leisurely pace. Andy’s the man in the know though, I’m just a workshop monkey – i.e. tool passer!

You can check to see wether it is leaking or not by getting under the bike and just pulling the gaiter off the back of the box,you don't have to strip it down to check!DON'T pull the gaiter out from the shaft as it's held in with a circlip and is mother f*>-*r to do even with the shaft out,but the gearbox side does not have one it will slide back on easy with a bit of WD40 sprayed around the edge.
As for the pivot pins make sure you heat them up to at least 80c you need to melt the bmw thread lock if you don't it could and does bind and will be imposible to remove them if this happens you could really screw your threads up,if you can undo them once you have heated them and they go stiff at anytime whilst you screwing them out stop and reheat IMMEDIATELY.DO NOT FORCE THEM ££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££
Once they are out make sure you clean EVERY SINGLE bit of old thread lock off them and your threads on your swing arm.Be VERY CAREFULL with the swing arm threads they are very fine and VERY FRAGILE.When I have replaced bearings or pins I only ever use MEDIUM thread lock,This way if you need to adjust while your out on the road for whatever reason you won't need a heat gun to it :D I never had any problems with it.Andy
