I have a 2009 GSA. I was on the way home the other night changing from a 50mph speed limit to nationals. I throttled up to about 75 ish and changed from 5th gear to 6th. As I did the gears jumped from 5th to 1st gear!!! The rear wheel locked and the bike twitched a bit and I very nearly Sh*t myself. The gearbox then seemed to force itself back into 5th gear again.

Has anyone experienced this? Or have any genuine advice?

Cheers

Dean

I can't think how the gearbox can manage that without a serious failure of the internal selector mechanism, let alone sort itself out again after. How do you know it was in 1st? Gearbox issues on 1200's seem very rare

The gear indicator on the display said it was first, the engine then massively over revved as though I'd dropped it into a much lower gear for the speed! The gear display then flickered and went back to fifth!

if you had went fifth to first wouldnt it have seriously engine breaked or more likely shafted the gearbox? If its possible it could be a serious mechanical failure in the box

Well something weird happened, scared the life out of me!

Just a shot in the dark dean2403 have you checked the bevel box ?? the reason i say that is when mine went on my first gs it locked up a bit like how you have descibed , but it wasent the gearbox but futher down the shaft ,probably not but just a thought :thumb

Gonna give the dealer a buzz tomorrow, see what they say? It's still under warranty anyway. Cheers for the advice.

yes let them sort it for you if its under warranty , there was a fair bit of play in mine when it was on the stand after , so would have probably noticed if it was the same with yours :)

I cant see how a dog box could go from 5th to 1st so I think it was your indicator telling fibs. That said something obviously did happen and if the wheel locked then it wasn't a false neutral. Were you canning it high up the rev range?

1200 g/boxs have no issues?

2010 gsa 1200 miles, major bearing failure requiring new box,

2008 gsa 18000 miles 3rd gear kaput,

and these were both mine, did i care?,no in the first case bike was replaced with new bike:thumb, the 2008 was repaired under extended wty.

My gearbox also went pop after only 11000 miles on a 2008 GSA.....put in for annual service at main dealer, picked up, 20 miles later...clunk clunk bang! Apparently 2nd and 3rd gears had crumbled and this led to gearbox failure. BWM paid for new gearbox even though was out of warranty, had to suffer the labour costs though.......oh well!....live & learn......now have extended warranty!!!!

No not at all, gentle acceleration. It just went mental and it dropped to a much lower gear, loads of engine braking.

If it did drop down to a much lower gear instead of one down then something is very broken with the selector drum. Personally I wouldn't be driving it as its likely to spit you off if it does it again. Time for a bit of investigation me thinks or a trip to the dealers.
