Really :D

Not got a manual to hand and haven't checked diagram, but

After I changed my gearbox last autumn I guessed on the connections for (I think) the neutral switch as no obvious signs which of the two wires went to which connection.

Since then I have always had to pull the clutch lever in to get the starter to engage, whether the motor is in gear or nuetral.

Does it matter which way the connections are on the neutral switch or is it coincidence

At w/e the starter just gave up all together - or rather the power to starter. The clutch cut out switch is seldom used, wereas I've been giving it rather regular us  so I'm guessing my problem is there, just wondered if the neutral switch could have any affect?

Be interested to know whether those wires have to be one way rather than another (I'd have thought 'right way - green light in neutral', 'wrong way - green light in gear')

Perhaps non of this is the cause and it's all down to the daft circuit board not lighting the bulb, the weak switch gear failing the clutch switch and owner neglect  Bit sick of parking on hills already though

It doesn't matter which way you connect the wiring on the neutral switch. I take it you haven't got a neutral light thats working.

Spot on Rob, didn't work when first connected and I couldn't be arsed sorting it out. Hmmmm... in that case using the clutch to start the bike is likely unrelated, maybe just an unhappy coincidence. Maybe I'll have to look at it properly at w/e...could always remove the cut-out switch :)P I know, not a good idea:D)

I'll get stuck into wiring diagram etc at w/e. But...
There isn't some requirement for the neutral switch, or bulb, to be working in order that the starter can be switched I suppose  Seems odd this all started after changing a mechanical part (gearbox) and only electrical item is the neutral switch.
Does the neutral switch have any other task than lighting the light to indicate not in gear? Surely just changing the switch from old gearbox won't be a fix? Have to do a search as I think this can be achieved without taking wheel and box out again.

What year (and model) is the bike ?

I'll look up the wiring diagram and see if I can help.

I'm assuming, from your first post, that you don't have a Haynes or Clymer manual to hand ?

Bob.

The neutral switch connects to the starter relay, 86a connector. Could be that the problem is with the relay.

The best one like yours :D a bumblebee '89 vintage. I have both manuals and will be out in garage tonight or over w/e. Just interested to know if there is a function with the nuetral light and cut-off switches and the like. Thought there might be a lecky wizard hereabout, basicaly being a bit lazy :augie

Hello, so sorry to bother you...

Hello, over here...

It's me, the litle fellah in the corner facing the wall with the big D on my cone shaped hat.

Teacher told me off!

I must not be so stupid in future
I must not be so stupid in future

I must not be so stupid in future"

You get the idea.

When I changed the gearbox and connected the spades to the neutral swicth I unfortunately pulled a connection apart further up! The continuity  was broken, so no green light, and no start.

If the switch goes, or the wiring (or bulb?), the bike won't start.

You can get around it however by pulling the clutch in as it 'fools' the system into thinking you've stalled and are starting in gear (with clutch in)

So basically it starts now, but not in gear with clutch in or out - so I've probably worn the clutch cut-out switch. I can resolve that:augie

"I must not be so stupid" etc etc etc
