Gearbox

My LC has an awesome gearbox. I have no problems with it. Yes it clunks into 1st, as did my previous Hondas. I'd love to ride a LC whose owner reckons has a duff box.

You're welcome to ride mine...Oh! wait a minute ... you can't ... and neither can I 'cos it's at the dealers with an acknowledged issue with the gearbox and is awaiting parts after being inspected by BMW techs.

Yes there's a few on here that seem to think as I work for BMW I shouldn't have an opinion regarding my LC and in stead of replying to the issue rant on about who I work for, by the way they don't know what area or department I work in they just assume I should know everything and accept high prices because im an employee, well its still hard earned money whoever you work for, I choose to buy BMW through loyalty to the brand I work for, even with the discount ive pushed my self to the limit to buy this machine. So for things to be not quite right is a double wammy as I believe and trust the BMW brand.

Anyway on to the subject my GS has covered 4700 miles and was absolutely fine apart from the clonk in to first which I accept is normal on some bikes. However I am now having issues of clonking into gears at up changes now and then, basically one day its fine another its not good and in fact pretty disheartening, Yes I work for BMW and yes my gear box is not great ooh how dare me complain.
I shall ask my local dealer what he knows of this issue if anything, and will ask my contact at BMW headquarters if he can shed any light on the subject.

hopefully there will be a fix for it soon and it will be sorted, apart from the notchy / noisy changes I love the bike. Ive also been riding bikes for 32 years racing bikes for 6 of those years so know a good gearbox.

Like quite a few people on here they love the bike but would expect the gear box to be better than it is.

Well said :thumb:thumb

Where do they go? Pray tell.

Back to 4 wheels ? I hope not as I really love BMW gs bikes , had all sorts of different bikes , multisrada , ktm , but the BM has something that all others do not offer , I hope my bike gets sorted soon as I miss the bike ..........:comfort

If it's any comfort, my HP 4 is prone to hitting a false neutral going up between 4th and 5th sometimes.

Excellent, when the engine races around to 14,000 RPM and then engages gear :D

I have now got used to the noise and feel of it not quite snicking in... Though the little monkey does catch me out sometimes still.

BMW are aware of the problem, as some bods picked up on it first in Prody Racing in America, where they were not allowed to use the quick shifter. It cannot it seems be sorted out via the linkage, though I have tried.

I to date this forum is the worse for all the reasons you have stated above, light hearted banter is fine but there comes a point that some remarks are out of order and unacceptable.

On the Box

Just remembered this year we hired bikes and road around South Island of NZ. One of my buddies hired a GS not an LC. He had trouble getting gears to the point were he thought he would have to return the bike. He solved the issue by the discovery that the problem with selecting a gear was the gear selector internal mechanism. If he tried to just click up a gear it would not go , but if he applied a little down ward pressure and then tried upshift change was achieved.

This was an internal selector issue and it seems from some of these gearbox posts that we have bikes that crunch going into gear , and bikes that are hard to get into gear ? These could be 3 separate issues :_

1) Rider doesn't know how to change gears smoothly
2) Gear box design
3) Selector issue

Will test four new BMW's for Gear box issues

We have hired 4 WC GS's for our Eurotour. We each ride different bikes at present : FJR , Ducati , K1200s and myself with the WC. I will poll the riders and see what they say about the gearboxes .

:blagblah I have not got a LC and indeed I have not gone for a test ride because even though I would like one I would have to sell my twin-cam which is an excellent bit of kit. The cost to change would not be affordable.
However, I felt the need to post something about some of the utter rubbish and insults which are thrown at some people for daring to complain about a potentially dodgy gearbox.
I have got a sense of humour and don't mind a bit of ribbing but some of the comments are just nasty!
My main point however, is that I look at the posts maybe two or three times a week and only seldom do I post myself. I have noticed that familiar names crop up on a regular basis and seem to appear in almost every thread with negative comments in the main, some of them hurtful and extremely personal. I get the impression that they have nothing better to do and I wonder what sort of narrow lives they lead when they appear to be on here almost constantly.
There are others that appear on a regular basis too but don't normally trash other's posts, people like Nutty who is obviously a gs lover and his posts usually are light hearted and to the point.
Anyway, wanting to say this for quite a while:mad:

There is a bit of bad behavior sometimes (a mini ASK.FM) but one thing i have noticed if anyone is having a problem bike or non-bike related there is always plenty of Tossers quick to offer help and advice.

Yes, that is very true. But the trolls do tend to put people off contributing to the discussions etc, I am sure

no problem

I am glad you are on the board, what's more I think to see someone that is not only passionate about BMW'S and passionate about his work is fantastic. I make a point of finding passionate people to employ . They tend to be the ones that achieve, know more about what they are doing , and go out of their way to help others. Great to know there is someone here that knows something factual.

Thank you

Believe me the BMW work force are passionate about the product we make, be it 2 wheels or 4.
we investigate the smallest of customer issues in great detail so a bigger issue like gearbox/clutch faults will have some major focus on it, I am sure there will be a robust fix which will hopefully come once the fault has been fully analysed and tested.

Could sloppy linkage be contributing to this s sue?

I have just been adjusting the height of my gear lever, a bit of fine tuning to get best fit with my boots. I noticed that there is quite a high level of play in the whole linkage. The gear lever itself is quite a sloppy fit on its shaft and then a fair bit more in all the other parts of the linkage. Could this be part of the gearbox issue? I must admit I was a bit surprised that it was not a smoother 'fixed' movement on the main shaft. As anyone fitted an aftermarket lever and has it made any difference?

Just got back from France, there was a Triumph Explorer in front of me on the Shuttle - when he put it into first gear there was an almighty clunk :D
