Just retourned from a week in Monschau in the Eifel region of Germany. Its a nice area, not beautiful or as scenic as the Alps or Vosagaes but it has its attractions. The biking problem is the speed limit, its 50 kph in the national park, thats 30mph through forests on straight roads or duel carriage ways. I had two days of it and headed back to Belgium, there the 70 kph limit through towns seems a little too fast.
Worthy of a visit but the Belgium and Luxembourg Ardennes are much better in my opinion.

Thanks for the tip Sooty, I have plans for the area for some time in the future so it all helps :thumb

Hi,

From 2002 off, I've been travelling yearly around some days in The Eifel [and Mosel] area. Only some small areas has this speed limit - it's around the Rursee [lake south east of Aachen] and some other places like the old vulcan lakes, but most of this quite big area has a speed limit of 100kmh. Which besides the cheap and good food, is why I love to go to this area :-).

By the way - Sauerland is beautiful as well and for me even closer from home - only 200km ;-).

Rob

I frequent the Eifel's of Germany on a regular basis ... never been a problem, never an issue :nenau

Even take group trips to the area ... I'm there next week on the way down to the Schwarzwald and back again :thumb

Two hotels I use ...

Hotel Forsthaus at Riedener Mühlen (My second home)
Hotel Hüllen at Barweiller

Please don't let this post stop anyone from visiting ... in fifteen years I have never been stopped by the police for speeding or any other matter :thumb

The Eifel region runs as far as the Mosel in the South and the Rhein heading East and includes some of Belgium in the West: the National Park is just a small part of the Eifel region. There are some really great roads in the area without mad speed limits and a number of small, twisties where you'd probably struggle to reach the speed limit. Lovely area.

Never seen 50kph limit, must look harder......................usually ride from Monschau to Blankenheim @ 80mph (except for villages)

Also done a few National park roads around that Monschau area last Aug Bank Hols, with some local 'cloggies' (Maastricht), who knew all the rural roads and we weren't doing 50kph, even in the pouring rain:eek:

Eifels & Mosel is a gorgeous area, love it:thumb2

Yeah, it's a beautiful area but I made the mistake last year of taking an extra day back from the Alps to show my wife the Moselle valley and wine route from Trier up to Cochem.

It took bloody hours, stuck in heavy traffic ( mainly Dutch camper vans ) travelling at 30 miles per hour in 30 degree heat .

Never Again !!!!

I was there earilier in the year and I have to say I had no difficulty with the speed I didnt know that there was a 50km limit but I never had any difficulty staying above 50kms :-)

That was the problem I was on the bike but overtakes were limited and the local police were out in force. Wouldn't have been bad in the car with aircon. !!!!!

The B258 is one of the finest roads on the planet.. 'twas on it last week myself, definitely not at 50kph (villages aside).

You's doing it wrong brother.

If yer that pissed orf with the speed limits, you can always have a shot at the Nurburgring which of course lies within the Eifel region, and really go for it....:thumb
