I downloaded this about three months ago and it works. It's a free tool that can remove and disable the 'Get Windows 10' notification area icon on Windows 7 and Windows 8. Recent versions can also disable 'Upgrade to Windows 10' behavior in the Windows Update control panel and do much more.

Spot on with the timing as I was about to look for something to stop the annoying Win 10 upgrade banner - but you've forgotten to give a name or link to whatever it is you've downloaded...

Edit: is it this? https://www.grc.com/never10.htm

Windows 10 and reasons for not installing it.

I can give many.
None of them are because I dislike the system.
I use Windows 7 with an XP emulator
This will not run under Window 10.
If I Install Windows 10, I have to "rent" my copy of Word off them, rather than use the existing copy that I have.
I have to purchase new cad software, since Microsoft made sure that 32 bit systems were incompatible with their new 64 bit systems.
I run many old DOS programmes in the Emulator. These programmes will not run under Windows 10. I earn most of my living on them.

I'm lead to believe that W10 blocks illegitimate software automatically, I'm also suspicious why they are giving it away free....windows 8 was horrible....suspect w10 is no better.

Made the move to Win10 - quite like it, is there a particular reason why you don't want it?

In my case (Sony Vaio laptop) Sony haven't released updated display drivers for Win 10. I let Win 10 install but then found that the display looked poor when viewing maps in Basecamp, so I changed back to Win 7.

Windows 8 was unusable until I found classic shell. It works with Windows 10 as well.http://www.classicshell.net. I bought a surface pro that came with Windows 10. It runs like greased lightning - very pleased.

The Surface Pro is a great bit of kit, just updated mine from the 2 to the base model of 4, not the fastest processor but good battery life.

You can stop GWX running with regedit, if you know how to use it. From the microsoft website

The registry key path is: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows"

You will want to create a new Key called "GWX"
Select the new "GWX" key you created
In the right pane, right click and create a new DWORD named "DisableGWX" and set the value to 1
