Here's a useful site for you to save away for some day when you need a cheap way to get on the internet abroad:

http://paygsimwithdata.wikia.com

The best option is free wifi - pretty much any hotel and lots of bars/restaurants now have that (for example, every McDonalds in France has free wifi).

If you need to be able to get on the net anywhere else, a good option is to get a pay-as-you-go sim with a data plan. The site tells you the cheapest way to get them in each country - I've just paid €9 for unlimited internet access for a month in France. That's like a trillion times cheaper than letting your home operator charge you for 'roaming'.

You'll need one of:

an unlocked phone
a 3G dongle and a laptop
a mifi gadget (provides wifi for up to 5 devices)

Be patient (they don't make it easy for you) and it's best to have the sheet printed out before you go.
