bought this 88 bumblebee knowing it needed a little refreshing/refurbishing. carb clean, check. petcock clean check. new starter, check.hooked up the battery, hit the starter, same whirring noise like the old one. does not seem to be engaging and turning the flywheel. yes, its the correct starter. no the starter ring has not gotten loose in relationship to the flywheel (loose rivets). yes the motor turns over by hand.
what next?

Part number 3 should fling out and engage the flywheel. If it isn't either the starter motor isn't spinning fast enough or the small pin in the fork (no 2 in the drawing) has siezed up. Looks like you need to take the starter out and either clean or replace it. Was your replacement new? Is the earth strap intact between the battery and the gearbox?

old starter and brand new starter have both acted the same, tells me it isn't starter related. battery is holding 12.7+ volts so i don't think thats the problem. at a bit of a loss....
pretty thing though, ain't she?

my starter did the same thing the gear was stuck and only spings round and does not go on to the fly wheel you my need to the the gear will move up to the top fully if it does not you my need another one

its very unlightly to b the starter try bridgeing the live (perminent) at the starter to the small wire to see if tht pinnon comes out to engage with the flywheel you should hear this. JJH

Check that the earth is good. Battery and gearbox connections. Try running another cable from the battery to earth as well.

removed the starter and spun the flywheel all the way 'round. everything's tight, no broken teeth. think i'll start attacking it from the electrical front. all the mechanical hard bits seem to be in order.

But, does the starter operate normally when you hold it in your hand and attach a battery ? ? ?

The solenoid should move the drive dog forward before it makes electrical contact and spins the starter motor.

You might have to strip the drive end and clean and very lightly oil/grease the 'pre-engagement' mechanism.

(Be very careful with the other end - where the brushes are located - the base plate is made of very brittle plastic and can shatter as you try to remove the brush holder springs (DAMHIK - twice :blast) ).

here's an interesting development. thinking it could of been the battery, i checked and its holding 12.7v, so i ruled it out. but when i tried to use some of the other electrics, such as turn signals and high beam, they would not function. the turn signals light up but will not flash. i have low beam but not high beam.
the battery i'm using is an odyssey pc680 and i was told while showing good voltage, it may not be putting out enough amps.
goint to try to jump it tonight and see if it is indeed the battery, stay tuned....
