hi all

i have a 2004 1150 gsa. i would like to fit a better screen to cut down on turbalance. being 6.2 and a bit broad i do seem to catch a bit of wind.

was thinking of either a give or mra screen.
not sure which one thou any advice on each one to cut down on a bit of turbalance

cheers davy

i fitted a mra lip to my 1200 gsa screen £90 off fleabay took all head vibes away clear vision now (clip on version)

one question lots of opinions i have no doubt,

Bigger screens= more turbulence.

The only way of solving turbulence is to correct the airflow :rob

There have been a good couple of threads about it here where airflow and things like NACA ducts have been well explored....have a search :thumb2

Before you change your screen at all, have you got Tobinators fitted?

I'm 6 foot 4 and I can tweak mine so I have practically no turbulence.......the basic principle, again, is to allow a volume of air UNDER the screen, so it flows up the inner face of it and negates or at least causes the mini-vortexes to sweep over your lid, rather than breaking on it.

Don't go for the 'easy fix' without understanding what the problem is caused by, or you'll just end up going through a dozen screens without solving the root cause of the problem :thumb

I fitted a Skidmarx (stop sniggering at the back..) screen to mine, Not completely stopped buffeting but loads better.

Fanum, and are you saying tobinators are the answer to the majority of the buffeting? I am 6'3" and prefer the saddle on the higher setting for leg room, however this causes a bit of buffeting the which it would be nice to reduce.

Sent from my tablet with spelling and grammar as if I'm on them.

Thanks for replys lap top broke so will reply when it gets fixed

Hello all

Thanks for al the advice i went for the tobinators

on Fanuns advice

cheers all davy

will post back when i get them fitted and tweeked

On my 1150 I had a standard then adventure then a givi screen and finally an mra, the first and last two with and without torbinators.
Best results were with the mra screen and the torbinators, no turbulance , very quiet and best for the pillion

Yes.

There's an old thread about it here somewhere......the turbulence is caused by little vortexes of air being created by trying to push the barn door of a screen through the air......the bigger the screen, the more turbulence comes off the edges of it (although you will create a void behind it)

Try riding a 'naked' bike with a well designed small cowl type deflector and it's amazing what can happen, as the air flow is directed smoothly rather than in little vortices (it it's set up correctly)

The same thing can be achieved by using Tobinators, which actually allow a steam of air up behind the screen...that though smooths out the vortices .

NACA ducts (and the split givi screen, same idea) work on the same principle, but not many people are brave enough to cut holes in the bottom of their screens :thumb2

The biggest mistake people make is to believe that a bigger screen=less turbulence.

It doesn't. :rob

MRA is the best screen for the majority................why?

Because (with the 1150GS mounts)

It is...

Adjustable for rake, by 3 positions

Adjustable for screen height, by 5 positions

It also is split and has a central V shaped moulded panel, on the lower portion to break the airflow and thus reduce turbulence

That's what makes it unique and it really is the king of screens

As Bill says you can also use it with 1150GS Tobinators, should you require to create even more adjustability permutations

Best screen for 6ft5in rider on 2012 R1200GS Adventure...

Following on from this, and being a newbie tall guy :augie I'm a bit confused about my options.

My basic understanding is that the Adventure needs a different setup from the regular GS.

I've been trying a Touratech clip-on lip spoiler which has raised the buffeting a little but not enough to prevent the head vibes. I have the seat in the higher position and also use an AirHawk so I'm pretty high up! Maybe I can stack a couple more lip spoilers on top of each other?! :blast

I understand the aerodynamics, that having a laminar airflow either side of the screen would be the best way (tobinators?) but Nippy Norman says there aren't any for the Adventure. Unless I misunderstood.

I'd rather get the right screen system in place so Adventure-specific advice would be really appreciated!
If this post is in the wrong place, my apologies, Mods feel free to move it :thumby:

hello tall guy

i got tobinators for my 1150 gsa at nippy normans so they are there

i havent got them fitted as yet but the bike is with jay the great and wise
with all things bmw on 2 wheels.

hopefully picking it up in a week or so, i will get back then and leave a review
on the tobinators who thought of that name anyway

Hi Davy, thanks for replying. Nippy Norman said that the 1200 GS tobinators would fit but the middle mounting holes would be unused, as that central bracket would need to be removed (like if I bought one of these MRA Varios).

So I guess I could get the tobinators and put up with the holes in the original screen (rubber plugs?), or get a new screen..?!

Think it was a Mr Tobin that invented them!

Another vote for MRA.
The king of screens is an Areoflow, but very rare beast these days........

feed back after useing the tobinaters for a couple of weeks

big reduction in turbalince = a lot quiter.
first thing i noticed is that my cornering speeds have increased and smoother
also.
funny what a bit of peace and quite will do

I would recomend these to anybody who owns a 1150 gs.
worth the money spent even if it is a silly price @ £138
i will buy a lip for the top of the screen next as i have some bufferting around the front of my head still so that should solve that wee issue

cheers davy

ps thank you all for feed back and fanum as these where on your advice.

I have an Adventure screen fitted with Tobinators - they fit just as per the standard screen - no need to remove the support bar at all - dunno why NN have told you this.

I'm in the 'very tall' bracket too. The Tobinators are very effective for getting rid of buffeting and vibration, both for standard and adv screens, but I'm still struggling to cut down the wind roar.

Hi, I'm 6ft5in, 2012 R1200GS Adventure, with seat at upper position plus an Airhawk pad.
I spoke with a Nippy Norman rep who likewise said that regular R1200GS tobinators don't fit the Adventure screen setup. I even said that the Wunderlich catalogue says "1200GS and Adventure" but he wouldn't sell me a kit.

I ended up with a Touratech clamp-on spoiler, which is better than nothing but I'd really like to check with you all that the regular GS tobinators fit the Adventure. Anyone got pics?

The NN website clearly says "all models, all screens"

I have a 2008 R1200GS which came with Tobinators on the std screen. I've just fitted the Adventure screen complete with the Tobinators. The screens fit in essentially the same way, so the tobinators fit just the same too.
