Has anyone fitted a new givi box with universal kit/mounting bracket onto a 1200 GS lately? Do you have to take off the BMW part and fit the new bracket or can you fit directly on top? I know you can buy a completely new BMW specific rack but that costs extra. I was looking at the Bykebitz web site to buy. Mine is an 05 1200GS.

Got my 05 with a Givi rack on the back, on top of the OE thing, i have it in the garage. I removed it cos i now have the box in the pillion spot when fitted.

Yep, mine sits on top of the original rack but with the givi plate attached of course. It was a bit of a bugger to fit and it looks a bit poo, but it does the job. I didn't realise there were other ways of fitting it.

Not wanting to hijack this thread but bustupbiker, would you mind telling me how you've fitted it to replace the rear seat? I'd really like to give that a try as it'd neaten up the back end.

Just to update I ordered a Givi E470 top box silver/black 47 L capacity and fitted the universal rack. The Givi bolts are not long enough to fit on the BMW rack so went down the local hardware shop and got longer bolts with wingnuts and fitted fine. Job done.

I bought the topbox mounting kit from my dealer and mad up an Ali plate
fitted the BMW fitting kit then the Givi bobbins and catch. Bingo...I'll see if i still have the pics i took when i made it... But dead easy to do, i did mine with a broken shoulder even the fileing of the plate edges.. mind you i suffered the next couple of days.

If you are just bolting onto the existing OEM rack (which is really just a plastic handle) then I would be very careful not to put much weight in the box, there's a reason for both BMW & GIVI specific racks having extra arms going down to the subframe, mainly because the original BMWgrab handle isn't strong enough to take much weight.

Yes, I realise you need to watch the weight. Givi give max as 3KG. Thats 3 bags of sugar! I'm sure you can do alot more than that but its about being sensible. I don't intend to over load it and at some stage will get some decent panniers to take the main weight.

Givi racks

Be a bit careful here; you will find a thread somewhere here on failure of the bolts connecting the supports to the rack. They used to break off and had to be drilled out. Givi did suply better/stronger bolts from about 2 years ago.
