Givi Topbox + BMW panniers

I currently have a GS with the standard GS BMW panniers. 'er indoors has expressed an interest on coming touring on the bike later in the summer on the proviso that we have more storage. I was looking at a GIVI e52 top box on ebay and wondered if anyone knew how this would be mounted to the bike.

Would the mountings for the GIVI topbox and BMW panniers interfere with each other.

You need to fit a Givi rack plate which costs £40 from SPC (or others) and you loose the grab rail. Once this is on the box attaches to it and does not interfere with the standard BMW system cases. Have it on my bike and it works fine.

fantastic build quality and the option to fit high level brake lights got to be a bonus !!
as said you just need the adator plate fitted and away you go
and dont forget that optional back rest to keep her in doors happy

The topbox for an 1150GS is the same as the old K1100.

Go hunting for a K topbox -there's loads around - and get the fitting kit I think it's about 80 quid.

I think it looks much nicer than the Givi.

In a word no.

Givi or Kappa (same thing!) produce two brackets that fit using the rear mounting holes of the BMW pannier rakie that provide a base for the metal part of the Givi rack to bolt too. I have the Kappa kit and the bolts in the kit don't allow for the OEM Pannier rails, but the BMW OEM bolts are long enough.

You also lose the OEM grabrail off the 1150. Make sure you unfo the bolts securing it one at a time as the light unti drops off if you do both at once You can remove one and loosen the second and then insert the GIVI stuff in the first to save it all going pear shaped.

I have the Kappa option and the plate that fixes with small self-tappers looks nice when the box is off and covers the bolts and gubbins.

Top Tip

I wouldn't put to much gear in the top box as it overhangs the rack alot and there have been several reports (and threads) on the rack cracking by putting to much in the top box.
