A Chilean mate of mine sent me a message this morning about his Dakar, apparently if it's stood with the engine running for a couple of minutes the header pipe just where it comes out of the engine is getting glowing red hot. I know this is a problem with the Boxer engine but didn't realise it was the same with the 650? Could it be a coolant problem or something more sinister?

I don't have any access to the bike as it's in Chile, I'm on the west coast of Saudi and he's on the east coast of Saudi but I'd like to help him with any fix when he's home at Christmas. Also he says it's a 2008 model if this makes a difference.

Cheers.

would have thought they all do that after all the petrol is burnt in the engine which makes it ever so hot on the way out. While the engine is cooled in some cases by water, oil or air the actual piston bit where all the buring takes place is as hot as hell on a mild day. The bit of the exhaust which is 3 inches from this inferno is only cooled by air so it's gonna get hot faster than it can be cooled by the surrounding air. My advice would be best not to leave the thing standing for any period of time when it's running.

This is probably not a technically correct answer but bikes are made for riding on not running and looking at...

Didn't know it was a "problem" on boxer engines

I'd expect any internal combustion engine exhaust to become very hot where it exits the cylinder head.

I reckon every stainless steel headered bike I've had will glow the header if left stationary.
And if left stationary with the engine running whilst on a trail ride, rally or enduro, you could get a fire going as the crud on the header would start burning. Hot sheep turd....... nice!:barf

I'm sure it's mentioned in 'owners manuals' that bike should not be left running stationary......:nenau

Timpo.

Thanks for the answers, I told him that I thought it was normal and that he should be riding it, not looking at it but wondered if anyone had experienced the same!

I'm not sure where the bike originated from so maybe the manual's not in Spanish......anything else and he's struggling!!!

I would suggest that if it is a 2008 bike, it is likely to be a Two cylinder jobbie.

Unless the South Americans have the G650GS singles, being part made in China.

I thought the same myself but figure he calls it a 2008 as that's when it was registered, I didn't want to upset him when he bought it by telling him they'd already stopped making them!

I've not seen it yet other than in photos (it's certainly a Dakar and also a single!) we were planning a trip from his home in Conception to Ushuaia early next year but we can't both get the same time out of Saudi so it's postponed a year.....I'll be buying a Dakar in Chile too just for this trip, hope them Chinese make good ones!!!
