Go steady in the wind - an expensive lesson.

Guys - yes I`m very very sure you all take care anyway but I am sharing this with you from a `consequential cost` angle through simply `not thinking` (I am not renowned for my Einstien-Like mental abilities ).

But anyway, I was in Snowdonia on my beloved GSA on Monday and the wind was horrendous. We were trekking up to the top of a feature and we parked to take an image and all of a sudden the wind gusted and took a fully laden yet muchly beloved GSA and rammed it into a post.

Although there was very little obvious damage the repair bill came to £391 for a screen, the brackets (£34!), the upper screen bar and a rear view mirror.

So, please learn by my mistake and don`t get caught off guard and end up with a big bill for expensive parts!

not much consolation, but could have been much worse. I'd have been a tightwad and gone for used parts I think, but would have taken longer and may not have saved that much.

Yes it was mate - it`s like cars - the new OEM parts are always a seemingly rip off.

I`m into manufacturing and the £100+ for the cross bar is simply rude - at a guess possibly only £6 to manufacture in bulk including powder coating.

don`t get me wrong - I am not whinging as no one held a gun to my head - its just an expensive business! On the plus side I got a service (6,000) at £300!

Regretfully I could not have waited for pre enjoyed parts though I do agree with what you have said

Oh yeah - either I`m very lucky or bloody stupid (the latter I think).

I suppose the shock was the price of the parts (even though I`m all `grown up`) combined with my disappointment over how a very beloved bike, perceived as being almost indestructable, could break so easily and expensively!

Ah well - I need to learn the lesson - albeit an expensive one!

i think you are reading the bill wrong mark the amount for oil seems far too cheap,and usually valve cover gaskets are charged for(but not really ness).

Ripped out bolt

You think that's 'spensive then I dread to think what they are going to say about my machine when they spot that a bolt has been ripped straight out of the engine case after my recent prang.

Needless to say, all you fine accessories (engine plate + luggage rack) are still in one piece Mr H. Shame the migsel lightbar is a bit bent. Anyone know someone who can straighten it?

I'd be interested to know if you were on the sidestand or the centrestand? And were you cross wind? Wouldn't want to repeat said error if I get back to riding at all.

Not as bad as leaving a frame mounted steering lock on and doing a turn in the road only for the whole fucking lot to come tumbling down on top of you at 4 in the morning, not being able to get up or pick the bike up and winded so not in a position to shout for help......... OH and i ripped my waterproofs, put a hole in a glove took the skin off my leg with the exhaust AND got gravel rash and scratched my brand new ARAI and also bollocksed the visor in the process..

And THEN (gets worse) when I got to work my new boss gave me a bollocking for being 20 minutes late, sent me home and told me I'D HAVE A DAYS PAY DEDUCTED FROM MY ALREADY SHITTY WAGES.......

Can you drill it out and helicoil it? it`s easy (I would say that - I have my own manufacturing company) but any self respecting engineer should be able to do it - otherwise i`ll do it for you but I`ll charge you a fortune in red wine.

Best advice is to stay out of Wales - you never know where you are going to get blown off!

Don't bother with original mirrors. The original mirrors, when knocked, need the use of a spanner to stop them flapping around. This is a right royal pain in the arse when in London as they are easily knocked when parking / filtering, and also when off roading.

Get a pair of unbreakable foldable mirrors from Adventure Spec for about £65 for the pair. The AdvSpec mirrors will fit any bike, just needing the appropriate adapter. For the GS, they fit into same threaded mount as the original mirrors, and are adjusted / tightened by hand / butterfly nut.
