Going to Norway in July 2007?

Think that might be a yes, Liv. Planning to pass through on 9th & 10th July on way to the Baltic. Haven't been in the south before. I would assume it's not as spectacular as the west. I'm sure you'll still say it's much more interesting than Sweden.

Liv`s with me then !

Went to Norway on Honeymoon

Gav and Bakerman are right!
Swede is something to eat if you are on a diet, Norwegian is not anything like that. :D :P

Bakerman;
-you don't have to marry again if you go over here.
And it's more fun to ride here without a GPS then using one.

All of you:
Try this:
Bring a tent and what you need for some nights out in the wild.
Buy a map at the petrol station in Bergen or Stavanger (or where you want to start) for an area with fjords and mountains.
Put a map on the floor, cover the areas you are sure you do not want to go to.
Cover your eyes and drip drops of ink on the map, let it dry.
Lend it to a kid and ask her/him to draw a line from inkspot to inkspot.
Find roads close to the kids lines, try to stay off roads starting with an E (like E6, E18).
Now you draw a line from the ferry to the nearest inkspot.
TAA-DAAAAAAAAA! There's your route for your hoilday in Norway! :thumb2

Actually that is not a bad idèa!
If you do that in the area Hordaland, Sogn & Fjordane, and Møre & Romsdal you will not ride boring roads!

If you do that with a map showing Sweden you are going to see a lot of woods and boring roads.

:) Liv.

It looks like I'll probably be choosing Stavanger as the starting point for a route to the Baltic, passing near Oslo. Are there any advantages to starting at Bergen instead?

Cheers:thumb2

Hi Gav!
Pick the option that give you more time on the road from the west to the east = get off the ferry at the first quay!
But the best would be if you can leave Newcastle a few days earlier and enjoy riding direction east - if you do that I would pick Bergen-Oslo because there's not only one fun road Bergen-Oslo.
I guess Stavanger-Oslo might be faster then Bergen-Oslo, but if you get really bad weather in May (sometimes, not often, we get the last bite of the white thingie for a day or two in May) there are not many safe roads to pick on the route Stavanger-Oslo.

If you are lucky the aple and cherry are blooming in Hardanger/Odda when you are coming, and that is a really good bonus! If the fruit trees are blooming that late Bergen-Oslo are safer.

But all this are details and most likely you are going to be happy no matter if you get off the ferry at Bergen or Stavanger. -Perhaps Haugesund is as good as the other opions?

If there are some places/roads you would like to find on your route, then do that! But keep in mind fun areas takes time if you want to really see it, like Stalheimskleivene (Bergen-Oslo, Voss/Sognefjell-route) = you have to ride it up or down slowly and take pictures, not just see the hairpins from the main road.
And the old & fun road Seljestadjuvet (Røldal) is a backroad - hopefully open after winter in May, needs some time.
Direction Odda from Røldal; Låtefoss. It's next to the main road, beatiful when all the snow are melting in the spring = hope for much snow now and hot weather the week you are leaving GB!

-What to pick? That is not easy!

:beerjug: Liv.

Hi, as I said, it should be 10th & 11th July.

I hadn't thought of Haugesund. Is that still an option? I'll have to check. Hmm, even more confusion now. What's Haugesund like? Worth seeing?

Thanks

Gav

Ooops! I mixed up!:o
In July you can go where you like - no problem, no snow!:bounce1
And the cherries are ready to eat at Odda.

Haugesund:
I can't think of any reason to spend much time there, but it's not a bad idèa to leave the ferry there. If you do, then pick the road passing Sauda up to Røldal; Eldjuvet and Ekkjeskaret are perfect for the GS! At some points it's not possible for a motorbike to meet a camper, and there is a veiw at the same spot... :thumb2
When Knut and I was a Sauda there was only one old hotel, not painted recently, serving expencive food, so it might not be the perfect city for one night.
But Eldjuvet/Ekkjeskaret = WOW for a GS! :clap

:) Liv.

Hi Liv:)

I've had a look. Haugesund probably would be a more direct route to Oslo but the ferry times would involve changing dates. Looking like it might be Stavanger.

Thanks:thumb2

I'll be here, hoping to meet tossers. :beerjug:

Hi Liv,

sorry, no Norway this summer, perhaps I'll come over in september for the GS-meeting.

Tell me when you know where&when!

I'm not the off-road type, but perhaps I can make some waffles for you in the evening? I got an waffle-iron that does not need electrisity! Trouble is all the others want waffles too... ;-)

E-mail me!: l-syulle at online.no

Liv. :-)

If so, we, me and Knut (k-nut) are waiting for you here 24th July!
We are going to stay here for two nights, hoping to meet friends on two wheels.:thumb

DFDS does not sail to Kristiansand anymore, so Newcastle-Stavanger/Haugesund/Bergen are the best option for sailing to Norway now.
You could sail Harwich-Esbjerg too...

C U! :beerjug:
Liv.

Not long now!

If you want to get one of the rooms I have booked, then do not wait!
0047 97013238 = my pocket.
l-syulle AT online DOT no = my e-mailbox at home.
I'll give you my rooms, that way you are not going to pay me for the rooms, you pay to the hotel directly, but to get the rooms you need to let me know.
I have 2 rooms (for 4 persons) at Fretheim Hotel and 3 rooms (for 6 persons) at Heimly Pensjonat.
Not cheap rooms! But there is a little discount for FjordPass members.

There is a campsite at Flåm too.

Pop over and have a beer with us!:beerjug: :clap
