I went through the same frustrations when I took my 1150 to Roy Gardner (RGM) and we settled on replacing the valve guides but keeping the valves. The softer guides were worn but the valve stems were still ok and it reduced the oil consumption effectively.

The whole thread is making me feel good about picking up a pair of very low mileage cylinder heads some years ago, though. They come off an 1100S so have a different exhaust stud pattern, but I also have a set of headers and a link pipe that means the swap is pretty straightforward when the day comes.

These heads that ive brought may have low millage for all i know so cant be sure, condition is good aside from the usually rusty exhaust lugs. good to know the guides wore rather then the valves. I might phone a few machine shops get some estimates, its not something thats on the cards for any time soon just fancy getting some bits ready for if something does sound like it needs a bit of spannering. Who would have thought valves would have been that much.

I've had 511GSs and every time I think it's the last one... And sold every one with everything I had for it...!

Spoke to a nice chap called Len at "the cylinder head shop" up in louth up north, he was quite pragmatic came up with a range of options for guides and re sleaving valves if there not to bad, although still quite expensive it was a whole package ie, seats, Valve faces, guides, stems and the system they use is far stronger then original design materials so should last well longer then me probably.

Ok since i last put on here about cylinder heads i managed to find a pair of low millage heads from Germany with the valves and guides with little wear and in tolerance. so im prepping them to be transferred to my bike, but i just been cleaning some carbon off the valves faces and the exhaust ports, but i need to lap the valves, never done before, watched a few videos seems relatively straight forward however i could do with some advice on lapping paste and grade to use if anyone has experience and advice it would be most appreciated. The valve face an seat all look good and leak down test was fine however while they are on the bench best to lap. Thanks
