As this board is primarily about sharing tips and info I have to mention the life changing thing I bought last week.

After spending thousands of pounds and man hours with pc's I eventually bit the bullet and bought what must be the equivalent of the GS, an i mac computer.
I have edited photo's, digi video, downloaded music, burned to discs without so much as a stupid driver searching/fatal error/restart again/windows has found something, can you tell me what it is...! message NOT ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I work for commercial photographers and all the recent changes to digital kit have come supplied with apple computers. Even if you specify a pc sellers refuse to do it as the platform is just too unstable and unreliable.

I now for the first time have a smart looking (17" flat screen one) computer that works as a useful tool and not a stupid tempremental time drain in a tin box.

I'm not on a bung here just sharing a bloody life changing experience.

(please don't try and reply how wonderful pc's are. You don't have to be a mechanic to drive a car so why should you have to be a computer nerd to be able to use a computer.)

happy bast***d :O)

Good man - you'll never look back........................................ever!!

PC's

Hi,

As a computer engineer, its not the PC thats the problem its the operating system thanks to Microsoft.

Try http://www.microsuck.com for all the alternatives to Micorsoft products.

But must admit for video / photograpich work the mac is a far better machine.

Cheers

Mick

Totally agree.

I bought a "normal PC " eight years ago and it was unreliable + I was always calling friends to find out why something I did the week before doesnt seem to work now so I sold it at a big loss.

Bit the bullet and got online 18mths ago with a fairly basic I Mac and apart from some initial compatablity problems which were easily overcome ( tip get yourself Microsoft office for Apple at the student price for your kids if you want to send word docs to others) its been the bollocks and works everytime.

It will also be worht a few bob should I choose to sell and upgrade.

Apple - you know it makes sense.

Allow me to tip back:)

Appleworks 6 will allow you to create, read and alter Word docs.

Yep - they're fantastic machines but they're no better at holding their values than bog standard Windoze boxes. It's the same old story "New model release- twice as fast - half the price!!"

pc vs mac

i love mac's .. but unfortunatly i have to work on pc'c cause my work dont support mac..

typical..

the only thing bad about mac is the fact that there are so few places to get stuff,, in dublin there are 3000 computer shops but only about 3 do macs..

so its hard to shop around.. and it also means software and hardware are usually more expensive..

if apple had been smart years back and allowed their machines to be built by other companies instead of only by apple, we would all be apple now and would not have to suffer the problems of microsoft..

so blame apple,,, i do, if they hadn't been greedy we wouldnt be in the shit we are today..

can i have my ibook now please?

i heartily concur - mac's are ace at what they do. i'm a designer, and have both a G4 mac and a rubbishy old PC which i use all the time. the pc handles my email - the mac handles everything else. it NEVER crashes, nothing ever goes wrong, and importantly the operating system just seems more 'human'. its true that they don't hold their value any better than PC's, but mac users don't feel the need to change their machines anything like as often as PC users do. the only downside as was mentioned earlier is that there is generally less software available for macs.

swan song

Now I am confident and happy with my new purchase I need to connect it to broadband sooner than planned. I was hoping to keep pc for internet use for a short while (familiarity).

That was...
Until my pc's final protest. It couldn't have come at a better time. Trying to open file and print directions to location for todays panic job and a photo sample of what they want me to make when I get there.
Couldn't open file (well it was a jpeg after all!) then printer gave me the 'out of paper' thing although a press of a button sent sheet after sheet through the printer. Re boot computer, printer, phoned a friend...nothing!

So I told the computer to clear it's desk immediately and security is about to escort it down to the workshop where I will carry out cosmetic alterations with a sledge hammer based loosely on techniques inspired by a certain t.v. commercial where an Indian fella turns a trabant into a peugeot106 (or whatever) only I am going for the beige fruit bowl look. ARMAGEDDON!

i book

swapped a year ago, never looked back, in the proscess of getting broadband,
not found a company that supports macs though, they say bring it in to a pc then network the two up ?

I've got a tasty dual processor G4 powermac - loverly but nit as tasy as the new G5.

Broadband is not a problem - i'm with BTOPENWORLD - supports broadband for 0S9 and 0SX - needs an external modem but you need that for any broadband connection.

PC's

So everybody on this BB uses macs, no PC's at all, well I use 3 PC's and I dont have a GS either,

:D :D

tree pc,s

How many pc's does it take to send an e-mail...

Well mick, s'pose you need at least three pc's to make sure one of them works i suppose.

but as far as your choice of bike goes, that's another story. I have a black roadster too and what an ace bike, I love it.
But don't tell anyone else on here.

NTL Broadband works well. The lack of official support is no big deal you should just need the appropriate numbers to put in the Internet and Network preferences. The help desk will give you those numbers. I used the NTL disc which put loaded the data into OS9 and then when I rebooted into OSX the data had been automatically transfered, either way is quick and easy (just dont forget your password ;)

DEMON have a specific Mac based broadband service and will supply a Hermstedt ADSL modem which is designed for the Mac only.

Used it for a year now and never had a problem.

Al

Will keep it quiet about you having a roadster, fantastic bike, use my pc's as a server, workstation and laptop, I work from home so have VPN to company etc. Never have any problems with 2000 server or XP.
