I'm off to Bulgaria on Tuesday, I was thinking about watching our progress on my eTrex when:idea I realised that I don't even know if you're allowed to switch them on in a commercial plane?

Can any of you well travelled chaps enlighten me on this?

A bit sad, but I've done it several times. My Garmin GPSMAP 295 is an aviation GPS so it comes with a nice externa antenna that sucker mounts on the aircraft window. It is fascinating to see the speed and height as well as your position.

What you need to bear in mind is that you might get a terrible signal because you will only be able to see a limited number of satellites. Sometimes you might not even be able to locate your position at all. If you aren't in a window seat then forget it.

As for aircrew, most are OK. Occasionally I have someone ask me what it is. When I say it is a GPS they say OK. You won't be able to use it for landing and during takeoff though.

I was going to call you a sad tosser Mike, then I realised that Bilko might ask what I thought I was doing with my SPIII on our last ferry trip back to Poole.....

 I'd definately check with the crew before you go sticking anything with wires on windows in a plane dood!!!

Wouldn't want top read about you being the first person shot by a sky marshall for attempting to blow up a jumbo with a GPS aerial!!!!!

Nah - wear a heated jacket too. It'd give you that 'hard-biker' cred!
