search on 2610 and Quest. that will give you 2 of the most popular options around here.

Pop along to the Ace cafe tomorrow (North Circular, nr Hanger Lane), it' sthe monthly UKGSer/GBClubUK meet. Be loads of guys there with GPS's - I'm sure anyone'll be happy to demostrate theirs. You'll also probably be able to compare a Quest and 2610 next to each other..............

Don't mean to spoil your fun, but you may be cutting it fine as it takes a while to get used to - just like any technology. My point is, you're leaving in just 4 weeks and you haven't even got the GPS yet ie don't buy a system on a Monday and expect to tour France etc with ease by GPS from scratch on the Wednesday. It took me about a week to get used to the unit and to understand Mapsource, maps etc. You can do it, but I reckon you will need to get your skates on. Any problems, just bung them on here. :thumb

I know you can take the instruction book with you, but at least make sure you know the basics before you leave home, because when the pressure's on eg you've taken a wrong turn onto a busy unfamiliar road, you probably wont have time to whip out the instruction book.

Hey Taff, it worked for me :)

Bought a Quest, got all the mounts from Ram-man; picked up a V8 CD from someone on the board, and took the whole lot out their respective boxes a couple of weeks before I left for Barcelona. Used it once in the UK prior to the trip south, and it all worked with no problems :)

Guido: Here's my recommendation.

If you want a small unit which also has its own battery power (i.e. you can run it powered on the bike and battery powered off the bike), then the Quest is a good bet. You can't get them new, so unless you can find one secondhand, you're looking at a Quest 2. The Quest 1 has some limitations on memory, but I'm just back from London - Barcelona - Millau - Belgium - London, and didnt have any problems.

If you want a physically bigger screen then you're in the 2610 / 2720 / 28xx units which also appear to be more all singing - all dancing. There are other differences; someone else can help out here though :)

All the above are waterproof & vibration proof.

For brackets, as you're in London, take your brand new GPS over to Ram-man at the GPS Warehouse (if you're buying new then this is where to get the unit also). Steve will recommend the brackets and mounts you need and you can see how it all fits together there and then (it really is straight forward).

For audio, get yourself to Maplins and buy a couple of mono earphones. Two minutes with a hacksaw and file to trim the plastic down and you have something that should comfortably fit inside your lid, and keep one as a spare.

The map software comes with the unit. If you buy new (assuming you go with Garmin), then you're entitled to the current map software, version 8, regardless of what version happens to be on the CD in the box. Garmin will send you a DVD once you register, but it takes time to arrive, but someone on the board here will no doubt lend you a V8 DVD to get yourself upgraded in the meantime.

I cant recommend this stuff highly enough - its radically changed the way I tour on a bike, hundereds of miles on farm tracks, minor D roads and forest roads. Brilliant :)

cheers

Since when has the Quest become unavailable?.. I spoke to Garmin a couple of weeks ago and they were still being produced and they are still shown on their site!

Sorry, l guess l am hopeless... who is ram-man?

Thanks for your advice.

Go to the top of the screen and the UKGSers banner heading. Click on the RAM UK mounting brackets image, between Nippy Norman and Sargent seats.

Ram-man is a member of this site, all part of Ram UK and very helpful he is too.

Quest 1 hasn't been discontinued or stopped being sold. Halfords have stopped selling them because they have taken newer type units like nuvi's and c510/550.

Other places are still selling them and from what i can tell are still going strong.

hope this helps :thumb
