Lots of bods prefer hooning in Luxembourg, over Belgium.

This is quite a nice 200 mile jaunt around the country, lifted from Michelin’s ‘Road Trips à Moto’ book.

Wiltz, Clervaux, Vianden and / or Luxembourg City itself, are all easly reachable in a day from Calsis or the North Sea ports. Here’s Calais, Vianden, Hook of Holland (non-motorway but reasonably direct) spat out in under a second by Kurviger:

An instant long weekend, using nothing but an iPad.

The bit south of Mersch is a bit shit, and it misses some really nice bits inside the loop, like the Michelin green road heading West out of Vianden, I would cut the main road / motorway bit off that and stick to the North of the city

I don't blame them, the roads are gorgeous, and in excellent surface state too.

We were there on Friday, last week.
I've asked my wife over the intercom, "There is a sign coming up for Belgian border. Guess what going to change?"

Wife: "Don't know. what?"

Me: "Roads are gonna change to 💩"

Right on cue, it was the case.

The Ardennes is a convenient way to get to Luxembourg ;-) Pretty in places, some good bits of road, but a lot of rough & choppy ones too, I quite enjoy them on my Adventure bike, but Lux roads are amazingly good, further out into Eifel they are pretty good too.

Hotels aren't badly prced in Lux either.

A shorter route, stolen with no shame and adapted from the MRA motherlode for my trip in three weeks. It's got some stops we want to do but stays in the 'Norf' as we say in London.

PS I have also done the overlay thingy and the route is also OSM/TomTom compliant.

As with any route lifted from a third party, it is a compromise, not least as a company like Michelin has to deal with a potentially hugely different but vast audience.

I guess Michelin’s intention was to all but lap Luxembourg and bring in Luxembourg city itself. This means that, in doing so, it probably / inevitably missed assorted ‘Great roads, mate’, as with the road westwards from Mersch:

That doesn’t necessarily mean that the rest is all crap, as these few screenshots might show:

My advice to bods is not to necessarily follow the suggestions blindly (not everyone wants or needs to go to the city of Luxembourg, though it’s not a bad place) but instead use them for some inspiration or ideas of their own. That said, simply riding (or driving) the Michelin suggestion would not make for a bad holiday.

A bit of feedback about this route. I have a bit of touring under my belt and this route in Luxembourg was fantastic. I had no idea such riding existed in this area and just over the border in Germany. First of all, the roads were in great condition. Secondly, they could be enjoyed at the either the speed limit or a bit above (ahem) and remained challenging and great fun. Lots of open curves, switchbacks and forests. Vianden was a great place to stay. I can definitely recommend our accommodation, Aubgerge Aal Veinen. The host Henri could not be more accommodating. Bear in mind that the rooms are on the first floor. He has secure parking in a garage nearby that takes six bikes. He doesn't charge but we reflected this in the tip. The food was great and a lot of people agreed as the restaurant was packed both nights. Vianden is picturesque and as scenic as a cake tin lid. One of the guys on the trip had a new 1300 and has a travel history that I can only admire. He reckoned this was his best trip so far, for a variety of reasons. Just a small suggestion: add some more waypoints to the route as we had a bit of confusion as we crossed over the previous route to loop North. This group decided to make this an annual event. You would never get bored riding these roads.

Richard, am I going bonkers or has the accommodation section disappeared? I'd like to talk about the two days we spent in Bouillon. We were split up so stayed in three places.

Can’t import that route as it says there are no waypoints in it

Import it as a track, not as a route. It’s a useful trick to learn.

MyRoute’s Routeplanner can and will convert tracks into routes or you can ride it as a track, if that is your preference. Just check that when Routeplanner makes the conversion, it has placed the shaping points properly (see separate post and thread on the importance of doing so).
