Hi all

I have recently discovered the joy of riding a motorcycle in places it traditionally wasn't intended for, and I quite enjoyed it! I would like to explore routes in the South but unfortunately my biker mates lean towards the sports/tourer style machines and aren't interested in getting them muddy :blast

Speaking with others on the forum it appears I'm not alone, so I wanted to see who else in the South/South East region would be up for getting together and tackling some green lanes.

Someone with plenty of experience would be essential as I'm fairly new to this. But let me know if you fancy it (regardless of ability) and hopefully we can arrange a day one weekend out in the British Autumn weather :thumby:

PS if anyone has route suggestions that would be much appreciated

Jason

Hi Jason, I was in your position years ago and understand your wish to get going. There are often rides on this site for both big traillies and 'proper" green lane bikes, but you can't do better than joining your local TRF group for support and local knowledge. You shouldn't do it on your own.

Awesome tip - not heard of TRF before but having looked at the site you have put me on the right track. Cheers!

I like this idea as well.:thumb I'm on the lookout for a bike that will do some greenlaning, and also some decent road miles, for the winter. Ideally a BMW, as I have a BMW insurance policy so can add more bikes for hardly any money. I'm sure though, that any bike under around £2k won't cost much to insure.

Recommendations on a postcard.:rob:beerjug:

I bought a R1150GS and put some TKC80 tyres on it.

I also joined the local TRF.

After getting to the limit of what I could teach myself, I did a BMW Off Road School level one on the new 1200gs which was fantastic. I switched off the traction control and ABS wherever possible to try and match it to riding my older bike.

Now I'm back to using the R1150GS on the local lanes and trying to put what I learnt into practise. Will have to see how I get on but so far so good.

Looking forward to doing level two next year.

To wet your appetite, paid up members of the TRF get better access to their trailwise site, although there is hardly any inprovement on the free for all version :Trailwise
Most people are very secretive about their favourite lanes.

Tempting, but that might be a bit big for me:comfort:blast

You could try the bike in your avatar? :D

I have done a bit of green-laning, although there are not as many around as there used to be, so be prepared for a few road miles.

My weapon of choice is a KTM 400EXC that i've had for a while, its a lot lighter than a GS, which is a real bonus if its wet/slippery. Much easier to start on this type of bike if you're a novice.

There are loads of used "green lane ready" bikes around, buy a cheap one and see if you like it.

I'd be keen to meet up and go out with a few of us - this sort of thing is better in a group. I am in West Sussex but have a trailer so can travel...

I'd be up for it but not for a while as I broke my foot 5 months ago and tore a bunch of ligaments so still in rehab to some extend.... give me 6 months though! :D

Could try either the g650 x country, or x challenge perhaps? X country is more road focussed, comfortable and more manageable, x challenge is more off road focussed and quite tall. Both will happily do road and trail, giving you loads of options for an interesting day out.

Husky terra te650 also seems a bargain. Finn has just bought one, going to see it later :D

Price wise, not seen anything under 2k, but sometimes ex ors BMW ones come up for a little over.

Being an utter novice at GL riding I think I will joing the (South London & Surrey) TRF to get some experience, local knowledge etc.

It would be good to get a few of us together either on a TRF run or at least when I can change gear properly whilst stood up :)

I recently joined this group. I've only been on the one run with them so far. It didn't go particularly well as I got an impact puncture after 30 mins and then my bike started misfiring. I bailed and limped home. They were a good bunch though and now I have the bike sorted I will be going on more rides.

I would also be up for a get together with people from here. :beerjug:
