Do not assume byways etc can all be ridden as the council put temporary restrictions and closure as and when they feel like it and you could face problems if you use the lanes under restriction. I don't bother to ride trails now due to the grief/confrontation that I encountered from ramblers /farmers etc. Easy way out I know, but I don't need it.
As it says on the link, ''for legal, corporate or commercial purpose, the definitive map held by Cambridge County Council MUST be consulted.
This is NOT the definitive map and has no legal standing.''
Be careful as there are many people itching to report m/cycle and 4x4 users.

I used to live in Baldock so used the ones near Ashwell quite a lot... y'know apart from other riders and the local farmers never saw anyone else. I can never work out where all the conflicts come from for most of the byways. It only seems to become an issue when the trails are in a "scenic" part of the country and the feckin RA who are lazy feckers anyhow ( if you where doing it for health you would be running the trails not dawdling on them! ) prefer to use the ROADS that follow the easier contours rather than the footpaths which go the quickest route from A to B ....
And also in the survey before the implematation of the CROW Act it was found that most damage is caused by farmers moving their heavier machines on the roads then 4x4's and horses , then ramblers and mountain bikers with motorcycles doing the least damage! Well there are only a few thousand of us realistically
Grazoid,
Yes, farm machinery and 4x4's really hammer the Cambs lanes in winter (near Ely in particular). Some of them were very difficult to get along even on an XR400
