Greg, I've seen your post re purchasing a garmin gps from the states from these guys:

http://www.global-positioning-system.com/

Like you said the prices seem pretty good. I've contacted them via e-mail and haven't had a response yet. What I wanted to know is if they stock the products with the europe base maps on them?

How did you go about buying yours for Europe - or are you in the US?

Unlikely. My experience is that you get the base map depending on where you buy it from ie America = America, EU = EU. It only really works if you've bitten the bullet and already have a EU City Navigator unlock code and then buy a 26xx from the US. Well it did for me.

If that supplier isn't helpfull try GPScity.com, who are based in LAS.

:D :D

Thanks

Sounds a bit too much aggro for me unless the price is really good. I had some feedback this morning and they said they could only do the US base map. I've had a look around the board and some folks seem to have had problems with getting the unlock code to change the base map.

;)

"Unlocking" the base map

My impression was that the base map is burned in and can't be changed ie unlocked. Do you mean unlocking the CN EU to the GPS? If you do, I had no problem adding a US base map 2610 to a EU CN. The only problem that has been stated many times is the lack of mapping detail at the large (5 miles +) zoom level when using the EU data. But it will still autoroute you.:D

Erm, I was actually on the piste in the French Alps (at N45 30.845 E6 40.745).

The vendor that you mentioned did, indeed, supply the unit that I use and it is an Americas basemap unit. I mentioned them solely because their prices are keen and the service good.

I believe that Garmin WILL NOT supply US dealers with European units and vice versa - so if you are buying a US unit, you must have a set of european maps that can be unlocked to your US unit.

Greg

Thanks

Cheers Greg, I've got myself sorted now with a Garmin from a UK retailer.

Hope the Alps were good - I'm going later when the suns shining! Must try skiing at some point.

It's almost better than biking! Don't leave it until you're an old fart like me!!
