Grenfell Jones, MBE
Grenfell Jones, better known as ‘Gren’, was the resident cartoonist of the South Wales Echo for over 30 years, until his retirement in 1991.
Born in Hengoed, Gren was the creator of the fictional Aberflyarff RFC, Ponty and Pop, Nigel and Neville the message-bearing sheep and many other characters. These humorous images of Valley’s life have made him an institutional name even outside his native Wales.
Gren’s success has also extended to producing some 24 books of his own works, as well as providing illustrations for numerous others.
Many of Gren’s sketches have been sold at auction raising thousands of pounds for charity. His charity work earned him an honour from the Variety Club of Great Britain and, in 1991, he was awarded an MBE for his services to the newspaper industry.
