While in Briancon,France, we met two Germans who every morning rode their R100GS's up into the mountains using off road tracks.

Over a drink or two they showed me a book called Grosser Alpen Strassen Fuhrer. In it it showed loads of routes up the mountains.

Ive looked online but its only printed in German and costs about £30. I cant speak German....... Does anyone out there have one because I want to know if its possible to use it without going back to school.

If it has got routes and maps (I think it has both) you'll understand them, even if you don't speak German. I have several German / Austrian map and guide books, not speaking one word of German but have usually managed to work out it out.

Give it a go, you can always flog it on.

I have a copy infront of me now, they can be bought off german ebay for a lot less especially the earlier editions. My copy is the 21st edition and is about 10 years old.
The maps are not hugely detailed and without some German need combined with more detailed local maps.
For the more obscure passes or higher off road routes the German text gives detailed directions on how and where to access the start of the routes.
Nice piccies though and good for inspiration.

otherwise known as the denzel guide.. its issue 24 now i think.

be aware that a lot of the roads in earlier editions are now closed to traffic, the newer versions are still out of date but more upto date.

dont worry about the grading system either thats the SG4 SG5 thing SG 4 + 5 is still easy to ride.
