We have just heard that the Grossglockner will open on April 30th this year. No word yet about the Nockalmstrasse even though it is run by the same company,

It's only one day early as both roads were due to open on May 1st but it does show that last winters light snowfalls and the very warm spring weather (28c here a week ago) have combined to allow clearing work to proceed quickly. And they get another days income from the tolls, I won't be there as our free passes run from 1st May. I hope to do my first run of the season soon though. It's always spectacular with snow still banked up at the sides of the road, it will be intereting to see just how much is there.

It can, of course, close very quickly when the weather draws in - we went over on 30 July last year and they were threatening to close it as it was 3 degrees at the Hoch Tor and snowing :(

It was 30 degrees and sunny a couple of days later though

Definitely the best pass in Europe IMHO and I've ridden 9 of the 10 highest

Even earlier opening!

Just had a message from the National Park Hohe Tauern office to say that the Grossglockner will open in time for Easter on the 21st. April
They are offering a reduced rate (13 euros per bike) as only the main section will be open.

No can I resist it even though I won't get my free pass until 1st May?

What exacly will be open on 21st April?

Hi John,
could you give more details on what exactly will be open from April 21st?

I have seen brief info on Grossglockner webpage about opening on 21st, but at the same time, they claim April 30th as opening day.

Could you recommend some relevant source of information?

Many thanks

Vaclav

The info we have received was direct from the Grossglockner company. Their website is often not quite up to date so I think the info we have is more reliable.

They say that the main section of the road from Heilingenblut to Fusch will be open from the 21st. The section to the Franz Josef Hohe and the run up to the Edelweisspitze will not be open although they say will be a few days after the 21st. They are offering reduced prices from the 21st to the 29th-13 euros per bike-normal rates apply from the 30th.

Hope that makes sense.

First time this year

Went over and back yesterday, can't believe it's still April. The main section was open, very little snow at the side of the road. I have been over in August when it was colder than yesterday. And only saw one motorhome, loads of bikes though.

Some pictures on our facebook page https://www.facebook.com/media/set/fbx/?set=a.10150274739845760.399660.155646895759

There was some confusion about the discount price, you got it if you asked otherwise the normal price. The charge has gone up to 19 Euros per bike, good job our guests get it for free!

We have also heard that the Nockalmstrasse opens on Saturday, I guess It would be rude for me not to be there.

Might just see you up there, look out for a grey 1150, Austrian registered, with a gaggle of UK bikers in tow.

Hi!

I am crossing the channel today on the eurotunnel. Gunning it down to Austria, St Polten to spend the weekend with my brother and then I have the rest of the week to come back through the alps.

On my way back I am debating whether to do the Grossglockner or the Nockalmstrasse, then I am moving on to the Bormio area and over to Konstanz... over to France, up to Etretat on Saturday before taking the Eurotunnel back to Dover on Sunday morning. :)

I have not fixed plan though so I may go where the sun shines :). Hopefully there will be passes open that I can do in the Alps..

Excellent info here! Thanks

Cheers!
