Did you get rid of the metalic cup around the spark plug? instant 1bhp increase. K&N filters are crap. get rid of it if you value the engine.( big stink about the particle sizes the do not filter out)
Then compare the sprockets your mate runs. Get a 15 tooth front if you want good grunt and 14 if you want wheelies well into 3rd gear. You will subsequently lose top end.
Then review the way you accelerate. You might just be a wuss riding the GS in the 2000-3000rpm range when you should be in the 3500-5000
