I do go to Steve, I even got him to do the tyres once when I was living in Middx. I timed it with a run up to the Lakes. H's usually a bit cheaper but £185 is the MOST I have ever paid ( daarn saarff) and it's just as easy to pop in on the bike en route to work rather than take loose wheels.:thumb2

:D £185 just seemed a bit pricey for Steve is all :D.

I wondered if he'd hiked his prices to cover the cost of the glossy brochures, coffee machine, imported Andovan pastries and showroom.

servicing

Just serviced mine today (80 000 miles)
gearbox oil (GL5) £9.99 at Halfords (bit left over from last time so enough to do rear bevel drive)
Piece of p*** to do yourself.
Engine oil £23 (Plutoline)
Plugs seem O.K. so I ` ll leave em
Air and oil filter + crush washers £19.90 (motorworks)
Valve check (look at Steptos ace `how to` + adventure rider - easy peasy)
Pads removed and checked
Gonna change the brake and clutch fluid tomorrow
balance injectors

Total cost less than £60 + the satisfaction
P.S. last set of tyres were £110 Avon Distanzias + fitting - a tenner

Took bike to Steotoe for 24k service. He gave brilliant service, another bike for the day and my bike felt like new after the service. PLUS I saved over £200ish!!!!!!!!

Do the oil changes yourself

Why not do the engine, gearbox and rear drive oil changes, air filter and spark plug changes yourself and take the bike to Steptoe to do stuff like the rocker end float, valve clearances, petrol filter and TPS settings if you're not confident of doing them yourself.

Print the service maintenance sheet off from the workshop manual (assuming you do have this - if not it can be downloaded as a pdf from a link on this site) date it and put your mileage on it and keep it with any receipts for oil and service parts and work done by Steptoe and sign and date your service record book - that's what I do and if anybody queries it I have all the paperwork as evidence.

The oil, filter and spark plug changes could not be simpler and can be completed in no more than two hours if you take your time. :thumb

just do what you can and get the valves etc done by a professional

but he is open and honest (read; blunt :D) enough that he even does write ups with photos to show just how you can Do It Yourself if you feel so inclined.

theres certain "main St. Dealers" that will swear they've done them less easy to spot jobs (e.g. brake fluid / oil filter changes), they'll charge you and not do it. :spitfire.
o.k - maybe, just maybe thats just Ireland and jap bike dealers, but i know people that have gone to the trouble of tippexing key points on their Bikes before getting work done to see if the tippex has been disturbed after the work is (allegedly) done.

What you've said about being charged for jobs that you can't easily check on is bang on. It's more common than people realise. A friend of mine is a motor and assessment engineer and from time to time is engaged by various trading standards departments around the country to check up on stuff like this, you may expect some cowboy in a backstreet garage to try it on, but apparently it's fairly common for main dealers to do it too.
Thats part of the reason why I try to do as much of my own maintenance as possible.
 
Does it really matter .Its easy to change .Even i done that ,and total was price of belt ,as the pulleys were already done . I know its good for a long time and easy to fix if anything goes wrong .Plus its good to know the little things that wont ruin a holiday ,Belt change on roadside maybe 30 mins if you stuck .

every one says that main dealers try too rip gs owners off.but working at main dealers for ducati,aprilia,bmw its not the case ,most bikers no there bike and any dealer no this and to say you need xxx thing when its not worn or damaged is dealer death.
as a dealer tech for bmw we work to a code and ,also a data sheet
we also check the bike has wheels

it take one line of there did this to kill a dealer.
so all dealers should always work to high stds.

just had steptoe give my bike a major service and fit a new clutch ,the price i payed was cheaper than the main stealers wanted just for the clutch well worth the 200 mile round trip ,
