Hi i'm looking at buying gs 650, quite a few are coming up to 24,000 mile service and they are saying its about £300+ any one no whats envolved thanks

The most time consuming job would be setting the valve clearances as it's a bit of a fiddle.

Here's the service scedule for a single spark 650, only difference is the fuel filter is now recommended to be changed at 24k, However the general consensus is to only change the filter if or when it becomes blocked, it's around £65 ffs

As for the valves, a bit of a fiddle, damn right they are. Takes me around 3/4 of an hour just to reach em through all the plastic and other bits. :blast Not too bad as the oil tank needs to come off to be drained properly and the battery can have a quick charge whilst it's out.

I'm coming up-to 24k miles, I should be able to do a complete service for under £70 :thumb2 £20 for the service kit which is two spark plugs and an oil filter, the rest on oil, coolant and consumables. I have a k&n oil filter that'll just need cleaning and oiling, everything else on the service schedule gets done as and when needed :thumb2

Thanks guys are valve clearances shims or screw and locknut :confused:i would be looking at doing work myself i'm HGV enginneer so should be ok  is there anything specific to the 650's i should be looking at when buying , good luck with Africa twin at weekend Timolgra :thumb

Definitely shims - haven't yet done mine, but it's supposed to be a bit of a job mainly due to the amount of dismantling to get to the blighters.

Checking valve shims

Is really easy, even for a novice mechanic like me. Loads of info and a step by step guide over at f650.com technical faqs.

The worst bit about doing the valves for the first time is that you don't know what size shims are in there. So they have to come out to be measured before you know what size new ones you need.

Keep a note of what size you put back in ;) DAMHIK

shims

when i did the f650cs scarver shims, i spoke to motorworks.
they were happy to send them sale or return ,just cost me the postage.
so that my be an option
pre ordering them before you strip the bike.;)
