I know its a long story but!! A mate who was a BMW tech has moved away out of the UK , he always serviced my bikes etc etc. I can do some stuff, oil changes etc etc, never set the tappets though. He got me some service bits and pieces before he went, all the numbers are the same and i cant recall what he said as it was 18 months ago. I really should have paid attention to what he did when servicing them, i didnt so now learning curve. Dont get me wrong i have a reasonable grasp re oil/filter/plugs etc, but tappets and setting carbs up i am not sure. I havent got a service manual so just wanted to know amout of oil/grade. I am guess a good 20/50. The font of knowledge is a wonderful place, it's just that i'm in a bit of a cloudy puddle at the moment trying to find it! Thanks for any help anyways...:)

Hi Steve,

I thought you'd disappeared on your round the world trip. Have you been or are you about to?

Make sure your gearbox and final drive oil are GL5 spec. The common gearbox oils at places like Halfords aren't good enough (GL4) their their 80/90 differential oil is GL5 spec and costs the same as the lesser gearbox oil.

Engine oil should be 20/50

There's a free manual here that takes you though it all

Go to WHSmith and order a Haynes manual for the BMW 2 valve twins 1970 to 96 or there abouts.

Or you could buy this one http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Haynes-Manual...es_Manuals_Litterature_ET&hash=item5633015b7b

All the info you need is in there, with the possible exception of the part numbers.

Re Part numbers: Call Mat at North Oxford Garage 01865319000. He'll be able to confirm 'or otherwise' the parts you have.

I'll give you one tip, It's a DRY Clutch, but if it's not been properly serviced for a long while, take gearbox out and lube the spline with graphogen....

Proff, I'm thinking about doing this to Jills 100 at the WeeKend. Assuming of course she leaves it standing around long enough:rolleyes:
Do I need any new parts? I'm guessing a driveshaft boot. What else is a good idea to have to hand?

Hi Rob, Not done the big one yet. Spent some time in Europe in my motorhome. Bikes have been back in the U.K. and if truth be told not used a whole lot. The trip will happen, but ive not been able to devote the lengh of time needed to do it yet, so its just shortish trips to Europe at the moment.
Thanks for the tips, is it such a huge difference in gearbox oils this GL4 and GL5 then? I can at least get my Castrol 20/50 mineral and stick that in. I'll do the gearbox/final drive again. Cheers for that Rob. p.s. where's the free manual you mention??? ta.

GL4 spec gearbox oil doesn't have the shear strength of GL5. BMW recommend GL5 for the airhead boxes and rear drives. Being as GL5 costs the same as GL4 oils why would you go for the lower grade.

This is the official line:-

API Category GL-4 designates the type of service characteristic of spiral-bevel and hypoid gears in automotive axles operated under moderate speeds and loads. These oils may be used in selected manual transmission and transaxle applications.

API Category GL-5 designates the type of service characteristic of gears, particularly hypoids in automotive axles under high-speed and/or low-speed, high-torque conditions. Lubricants qualified under U.S. Military specification MIL-L-2105D (formerly MIL-L-2015C), MIL-PRF-2105E and SAE J2360 satisfy the requirements of the API GL-5 service designation.

Have gone for Castrol Differential EPX 75W-80 API GL5 for final drive and gearbox, hope this is ok.
Can i get mineral 20/50 ? Nope!! Ive got some Halfords 20/50 Classic car oil in the dark green gallon tin, says for classic cars of the 60s 70s and 80s. Would it be ok to use this??..does'nt state any spec on the tin though.
Any thoughts please?

I've been using the Halfords Classic oil - no problems, or you could try Millers Oil -.
Some suggest synthetic oil as being more modern and advanced, ( 10 -40 w- ) but oil is a rather , erm, tetchy topic on here !!

isnt 10-40 a bit thin? just gonna do my final drive and gearbox (if i can find the drain holes) lol, i guess with the drive and gearbox its fill up to the point the oil starts brimming over the fill hole?

Should all the fill plugs gearbox/final drive have washers on? The drain plug for the drive oil doesnt have one, is that normal? The drive oil was clean-ish but black sludge around the magnet( i assume magnet) is normal and needed changing? i'll put the halfords classic 20/50 in i think. thanks for any help.
