My GS 800 has ABS and I would like to turn it off permanently. There must be a simple way to confuse the system. Any advice?

Unbolt the ABS sensors and tie them out of the way? When the bike starts the ABS will (read: should) fail to initialise and thus it won't be enabled.

However I think the ABS sensors are also used for the speedo... so maybe it's not a good idea at all :D

Next!

Disconnect the front ABS sensor. Each time you start the bike the system will fail the self-test and disable itself. Leave the rear sensor connected as this is required for the speedo. You will of course have a permanent fault warning on the dash - "brake failure" or somesuch - just ignore it :-)

Until the next MOT.

I am guessing the OP is finding it too strenuous to simply turn it off at the handlebar :nenau

And no doubt invalidate your insurance ?

ABS is for riders who dont know how to break and its a pain remembering to switch it off each time.
Fooling the sensor is the best way to deal with it and solve the problem. Will just live with the cockpit light.

Tx for the input

Let's get this right , this is YOUR bike we're talking about? :augie

So what happens if you turned it off on the handlebar switch and have an accident!
Best way is buy a GS without ABS:augie

my 650 has no ABS.
Having had 2 failures on 1100/1150's i will take my chance.
:rob
switching it off is not the same as taking a censor off or disabling it by naughty means ;)

I think it may be an opto electric system, in which case maybe sticking a pit of black tape over the sensor will work. This is a guess by the way!

In my mind disabling the ABS whether by switch or any other means is the same thing. I would have bought a non ABS model but I simply could not find one.
If insurance companies have a problem with you disabling ABS , then simply shop elsewhere. I cant believe that bikes with ABS have a different rate compared to bikes without.
What would happen if you were riding off road and fell. Would your insurance reject the claim because you failed to switch the ABS off?

Add washers under the FRONT WHEEL sensor mounting screw, keep adding until the ABS stops switching on when the bike is moved.

Shouldn't take many washers to exceed the sensor range.
