Just about to buy a new GS800 and would like to fit a set of crashbars. Can anyone suggest the best ones to go for that offer the best protection in an 'off' without breaking the bank. Thanks in advance.

Adventure spec crash bars, available from the Adventurespec website, link bellow takes you straight to the product.

I have no experience with the Adventure spec bars but have heard loads of good about them! :D

I my self has used and tested Metal Mule crash bars. They have protected my bike several times and have always protected the bike and me!

These are available from the Metal Mule website bellow,

Use to work for Metal Mule so if you like the look of them than I can see if I can get any discount on the price.

Both crash bars will serve you well and its worth paying for some decent bars as they can save you money in the long run!

drawbacks of adventure spec ???

Expensive

and

depending on how long your legs are you can find your knees hitting the Adv Specs

Holans also protect the engine casing which some don't

and unless you intend to do some back to back crash testing how do you know which are best ???

Have a look on U Tub for the (alleged) manipulated test of the Metal Mule bars

Alleged manipulated test for metal mule? Interesting? Have to admit think the Holan bars would do fine to me! Also had a set of givi bars that i slid down the road on! Did the job well!

You get what you pay for and the adv spec bars are up to the job, I'm 6ft 1 and have no problem with knees touching them, they protect the casings and the radiator which the holans quite clearly don't

no need to test them you can quite clearly see what's is gonna protect what

I'm sorry but those Hollans won't protect as much as the adventure spec bars

A bold conclusion!

I bought the Holan crash bars and was at first gutted when I compared them to other larger diameter tubed bars and I too was doubtful that they would be much use for anything much more than falling off the sidestand and looking better , that is until I had an off recently on a gravel road doing about 30 mph. They did the job of taking the impact of the bike hitting the deck in a washout and a short slide - just a graze to the bars and end weight of the handlebar and rear luggage. The bars did not bend.

That is the job I wanted them to do. The design seems to work despite narrow gauge tubing. Is that proof that they are as good or better than any other bar for protection - I dont think so - no spill can be replicated - they might fail next time - narrow tubing might bend on impact before transferring all the force to the lower mounts on the engine.

I want them to protect my no claims bonus and excess for a minor fall or impact which for me is a certainty when trail riding. Anything more and the bike would probably be a write off with or without bars. Better protection does not mean avoiding a scratch to a casing when the rest of the bike is trashed.
