GS Adventurer PARTS retrofited on the R1100/1150 models

Hi Simon
Did you find out wether the seat and grab rail of the adv
could be retrofitted to your bike ? i've fitted the beaky thing
and the lamp guard i don't think the crash bars are gonna fit
with the 41ltr tank not to mention the sump guard.
but i do fancy the lower single seat (the black one)

cheers

Hi,

As far as I can find out the seat and grab rail will fit, 1100/1150.

However, the engine bars wont as they fix to different pionts on the underside of the engine.

If you like the seat, it might be worth checking out the Touratech single seat @ Bracken. It comes in several hiehgts. I've tried it and thought it was pretty good.

Cheers

Accesories

Cannot help but think I have wandered on to a Harley Davidson site with all this talk of accessories and the like. Some leather tassles on the end of the bars would stop some low speed scuffs when moving the bike off its stand and around a garage,....very essential. I have even heard talk on road bike sites that us GS owners are becoming the BIKE equivilant of the Discovery/Range Rover Brigade. Does it really matter that the Adventure has 20 or so mm of clearence to help it cross rivers without touching the huge rocks that lurk therein....who gives a toss? as there is next to no chance that the majority of them will ever see a river crossing let alone large rocks.

Keep it real. and just ride them. The roadies await to take the michael and can we blame them?

Accessories and extra's

ANDY MELTON

what was the point of your post above???

People that buy bikes, buy aftermaket kit to put on them. It's just a fact.

Some want a pretty bike, whilst others are looking for a particular type of performance and function.

And yes, Some will see sand, rocks and river beds.

Have you added nothing to your bike??? is it completely stock?

As for the 'OPINIONS & TALK' of the 'road bike brigade'you refer to....... .....WHO REALL GIVES A F#"^#$" TOSS.

Cheers
Simon T.........Keeping it real:D :D ;)

Adventure seat

Hi Simon

Been up SPC,s today having my new rear shock fitted under
waranty while i was there i had a go on a adventure nice loved
1st gear not sure about 6th bit vibey, took seat off to have a
look :( not good i think cost is going to be toooo high ,
i was using the lower saddle which wasn't too comfy but
it was new so would probably get better in time.
Crash bars would fit but you'd need the bash plate.

Were are the tools ?

The tools are in a tool roll, similar to what all of the twins had from 1969 to 1994.

Being clever people, they more than likely removed them, so that riders wouldn't be tempted to remove them.

diff breather

Mick,

Any news on that diff breather?

I'm still interested if you can get me a price etc.

Many thanks

Simon, I have your diff breather in my hot little hand as I write this!!!!!!!!

I met up with the guy who actually manufactures them today, He has been away for 2 months and next week he and his wife fly to Bali for 6 weeks and heavens knows where else. They are retired and they travel all over the world, literally.

As that was the case I bought one for you that he had in his top box. If you don't wish to have it, it isn't a problem, plenty of other people will gladly buy it off me.

The cost is $40.00 Australian which sort of works out at about 13 pounds 33P at a rough guess.

I can post it over to you, how quickly do you need it? It can be there by the middle of next week if you wish!

Email me direct with your email and we can swap whatever we need to swap.

Mick.

PS:- he has improved the design since my version, which was the first one he made.

Regarding a coment someone made earlier in this thread about keeping the R1100GS that youv'e got already as you know it well, is there any truth in that the old 5 speed gearbox is more trusty than the newer 6 speed. I have read a few times on here that folk have had problems with the 6 speed box and when in Belgium met a couple of GS riders who had left their mate in Ireland as his 6 speed box had stuck in gear.

Whats the general verdict??

I'm interested as having a R850GS the box should last even longer with less power going to it.

Andy, the 1100 and 850 run the same box. Both bikes weigh the same. Unless you are really pushing it, both bikes work their gearboxes exactly the same.

How so? Well to push a bike that weighs about 450 Kg at a steady 100 Kph, takes exactly the same amount of horsepower whether the engine is an 1100 or 850. In the case of the 850, one assumes the throttle is worked a bit harder.

If you wish to thrash the bike, then yes, there is a difference and the 850 should have a longer lasting gearbox all things being equal.

The real difference between the 850 and 1100 is the diff ratio, nothing else.

As for the 1150 gearbox, I suppose it's alright, except I don't think the diff ratio is correct for the power output of the engine. It appears that the 850 diff in an 1150 means that top gear and first gear on the 6 speed box are more or less the same as the the 1100.

I think BMW went too far with the 1150 and the 6 speed box and now appear to be making corrections with the Adventure version with the altered sixth and first gears!

Mick.

Andy I just re-read your question. I don't believe that there are any major quality changes between the 6 speed and the earlier 5 speed boxes.

That said I have known of only 1 5 speed bike stuffing up his box and 2 6 speeders doing the same. But really I' not sure whether a lot of the problems cannot be attributed to rider error.

Usually somewhere somehow one always stuffs up and slips the lever instead of changeing correctly and then one drops the clutch rather heavily sometimes and the next thing you have inadvertantly stuffed a cam pawl or something like that I don't think either box is better than each other froan academic viewpoint.

However form anecdotal evidence I think the 5 speed is better built from a dropping viewpoint. If you stepoff on a 5 speed bike and lay it on the side it just sort of slips along and it's alright. However the 6 speed is problematic in that if you drop it on the footpeg setup then the mount for the gearbox is one and the same and I know of two instances where a simple slip off and slide has resulted in a six speed bike being totally stuffed in that they received cracked gear box casings after a direct drop onto the side.

adventure bits

I got the adventure nose fairing thingy from my dealers in dublin, (maxwells) only costa few quid 40 euros or so, cant remember, anyway they ordered it and had it in a few days, it took me 20 mins to fit, all i had to do was drill 6 holes which was easy as the nose section is plastic..

remember to order the nuts and bolts at the same time, again only a few euros..

it fits great, looks good and hides the scrapes n dings form stones..

i dont know what teh story is on ordering it, as i said i had no problems whatsoever..

next stop the 30ltr tank,, 670 euros primed.. what do ya think is it worth it?

regards

Pthagonal

30ltr tank

Hi Pthagonal

I think everyone's got a beaky thing now
as for your tank £425 which is £200
cheaper than a touratech 41ltr which only holds 37ish:rolleyes:
at least your fuel guage will work properly mine's dry at 5 bars and you'll have no trouble with engine bars. what paint job are you having ?
