Hi, just wondering what it may be like to come from 83bhp 43footpounds of 179kgs (dry) fzs600 fazer to
a 650cc single 50bhp 50-odd ftlbs dakar

the BMW salesman said I need the 1200, but he would say that.

I cruise at 85 mostly on mways 60-80 a roads, like to carve b roads and but camping luggage on.

I bet the Dakar will struggle with high speed passing...

Cheers

I once went from a 955 Triumph Speed Triple to a Dakar. Before the Triumph I'd had a yam 1000 and CBR600

1. What the engine lacks in power it makes up for in character - great engine
2. They are faster on the twisty roads than you'd expect. Partly because the high seat gives a great view ahead but also they just feel right

3. 100mph is as much fun on a Dakar as it is at 150 on a big bike

I did mod the screen on it - it was a 51 plate and at 6ft found the screen to cause a lot of noise.

I'd say 70mph is the cruising speed on a motorway, it will give more no problem but may feel at bit buzzy due to no 6th gear.

A great bike and I really did like the one I had.

However, if wanting high speed cruising or carrying a lot of kit a twin might be worth thinking about.

First question, why a Dakar & not a standard GS? which is better equiped (centre stand as standard), has more choise of tyres & choice of 3 colours.

Mine will cruise the A1 at 80-90mph, fully loaded, & manage 82mpg.

Avon Distanzias last 12k miles a pair.

Fit a Scottoiler & the chain & sprockets can last 25k plus miles.

The only excuse for a 1200GS is regular pillion carrying. IMHO ;)

Cheers for the input. I'll be trying a Dakar 1150 and 12 this weekend.. tomorrow in fact:thumb2
Cruising at those speeds is what I do now so should be fine.
NO pillion so keen to get a cheaper 650 if it'll do the job.. no sure about milemunching on it, hance looking at 1150s too.

The reason for dakar, is I think the standard 650 seat is low? and I intend to go offroad.

Should I be looking at the 650? Centre stand thing would be nice.

what are the other differences aprt from bigger suspension on teh Dakar and no yellow one available! (have a thing for yellow bikes!:)

At 6ft I personally found the standard GS a bit small. The tyre choice is better if you like scratching though.

The Dakar is better than you'd give it credit for on a twisty road, not quite knee down but still shames many a bike.

Longer travel, screen, bigger front wheel etc.

I fitted bar risers and actually raised the standard seat - incredible comfort if you don't mind tip toes.

no sure about milemunching on it,

Just over 1200 miles this week on the dakar, 800 of that over 3 days, and the rest on one day. Sure not as fast as a bigger bike (was doing up to 90 on the clocks :augie )but it goes though gaps in traffic that the bigger gs's will struggle with. And it's mostly comfortable, arse did hurt a bit after the 400 miler tho :o
