Well my front end rebuild is approaching hopfully to take place in Panama City in about a week (I hope!) now as I´m here at present in Costa Rica, very nice but no bike I have not got a manual. Now all I need to know is, how much oil is required in the front fork legs on an 1150 gs 2001?. Any reccommended grade?.
many thanks they should know in the dealers but I´d like to hear from the real experts rather than the Panama dealers.

O.47 litres per leg (0.49 US quart) - the manual says use 'BMW Telescopic Fork Oil'. No need to upgrade, it's only for lubrication.

1150 should be very similar to 1100. All the front forks do is directing and they need some lubrication for movement, only central shock does the suspension job, not the forks.

BM recommends 5W viscosity for softer movement, 10W for stiffer. I've used 15W Castrol racing suspension oil no prob and it doesn't play any real difference in dampening characteristics.

Please clean the moving surfaces of the forks with soft wet cloth frequently on the trip, do not scratch them. Dirty (mostly dust and mud) forks can cause oil leak from the seals and SA is typically known of leaky forks coz of bad roads. I know one 1150 guy in S-Am who had to replace the front shock seals two times per some 5000kms or so. He put some Honda fork seals he found in SA that fit in. So try to keep the moving surfaces clean, cleam them every moring if possible especially in shitty conditions, this is the best way to avoid leaky forks.

many thanks for the info, have been warned that service in this part of the worls aint too good so thanks for the info. Will report as soon as thr rebuild is done.
